destination wedding

I am curious about destination weddings & the experiences (good & bad!) that people have had with them. I am currently leaning towards Jamaica...thoughts?

Sorry, I've never been to a destination wedding but I personally love the idea of them.  We had a few key people that couldn't do the travel (his mom, and all our siblings) so we decided against doing one.

I have been to Jamaica and I have to admit that it was not my favorite island.  It's very dangerous off resort and it wasn't as pretty as some others, unless you go to Ochos Rios (or so I've heard).  I have to say Aruba is one of my favorite islands that I've been to.  It's clean, safe, easy to get around (bus system for $1 each way), the food is good, and the water is beautiful.   Everyone speaks English and the people are very, very nice.   Have you been to either island?

i second about jamaica, i really didnt like it much at all and had a bad experience with some locals on the beach. pretty place but for the money there are better options that are just as nice and safer. im having a destination wedding but only 3-4 hours away and not warm =)

if you got to jamaica i wouldn't leave the resort.....

there is a lot of poverty in jamaica, it is very expensive to live there, ocho rios is beatiful!

Look up Lover's Key resort in FL. Ive seen it in multiple tv shows and in travel magizines and ive always wanted to visit. Plus its not out of the states < can be cheaper.

I consider who would come, how much it would be, if anyone wouldn't be able to come for any reasons ect

I went to a lot of destination weddings.  Good and bad.  I think I had such a bad experience in the last one, we decdied not to have a real destination wedding.  So my fiance I decied to have a "destination" wedding at Maine, we live in NYC.  The bad experience was in Mexico, it was a 5 star expensive resort.  The front desk couldn't find people reservations, the music cut off at the first dance, mother and son dance as well as the daughter and father dance.  Not enough seats for all the guests, the list can go on and on........you have less control when you have a destination wedding and there are more risk to go wrong.  However, I have been to one in Thailand, it was amazing!!!  I currently have a friend who is planning a wedding in Mexico at a very expensive resort, no one wants to go, he ends up having only family there and I know he is disapoointed.  I would suggest before you decide the place, go and visit and read reviews.
