We'd love a Band, we have Q's...

My fiance and I are very keen on having a big band jazz feel. We're doing Romance meets Rat Pack. So a band is pretty much essential. And we'll make the budget work for whatever we need to, of course. We're having about 100 people in a nice sized ballroom.

We've decided to enlist some great musicians from our local college.

So our first question, for a big band feel, how many players should we enlist?
Should we have a conducter too?

Also, how much time should we set aside for dancing?

I'm a music major at a university in Texas, and I LOVE your idea to have a big band at your wedding.  If my fiance and I could afford it we'd be on it in a heartbeat.  He's a jazz pianist, and both my dad and brother are jazz musicians as well.  If you want a real "big band" type feel, you may want to try to hire out an entire jazz band from your local college.  Usually, with that, you get a rhythm section which consists of a drummer (sometimes 2), a bass player, and pianist.  You get 2 tenor sax players, 2 alto sax players, a bari sax player, 4 tenor trombones and a bass trombone, and about 6 trumpet players.  The numbers vary sometimes, but that's pretty close to right.  Depending on the group, you may need a conductor, but if you book the entire jazz band for your gig, I would imagine their director will come with them.  Some professional jazz ensembles will have a band leader that also plays during sets.  So, they wouldn't need a conductor.
As far as how much time to set aside for dancing, I think that's up to you!
    I hope this helps! :)

Wow that really does! Especially for how many to ask for and where to start looking. I will definitely research the groups already together before I start anything like additions.

I'm glad you like the idea too, and hopefully you'll find something bandwise that you love too! We'll probably do smaller food budget and bigger music budget. lol
