Dress me, please

Ok. I know I've asked this before because we've rescheduled like 12 times, but we have engagement photos this weekend and I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO WEAR. It's supposed to be in the 40s and sunny in NYC and we'll be walking around the city and Central Park.

A lot of my clothing is black and white or neutral tones. Do I need some color?

Should I wear boots? I am short and don't want to make my legs look shorter by doing the jeans-inside-boots thing. I do not wear sneakers, except for at the gym.

What about a dress? I'll be wearing a coat, I'd assume...so does this even matter?!

Suggestions, please. (Apologies for the freak out.)

I have no idea if this is going to show up big enough, but it was a very cute guy/girl shirt ideas based on a color.

Have you browsed through other engagement sessions and found outfits you think are cute?  I may end up copying someone else's outfit because I cannot think of this stuff on my own.
  • That is SO cool. I have looked at other people's photos, but honestly, my closet is pretty boring. I will definitely think about color combos like you posted.

  • I doubt I own anything in my closet that would work either!  I'd probably buy a new piece or two for my photos.  I have something envisioned for fall (heeled books, black tights, wool mini skirt) but not spring!

I might end up taking photos of my outfit and posting them on here for people to vote on.

I might do that as well - honestly.

My fall wardrobe is SO much better than my spring/summer wardrobe - which consists of too-short shorts and t-shirts mostly.

I have lots of cute fall clothes.

  • You guys are totally convincing me to go home early and take some photographs in my ever-so-interesting black-and-white wardrobe.

FWIW, I am actually wearing a GREY suit today. With a black button up. With black tights. And black shoes.

    :( My clothes are boring.

Maybe get a boldly color necklace?  Or a cute colored skirt? to go with what you already have?  I'm particularly fond of ruffled tops.

  • Ooo. I like the idea of a colored skirt. Going to search online now... :)

  • are you on pinterest? they have a great 'women's apparel' section. i put outfits together with the pictures i find on there.

    good luck! & have fun!
  • I did mine in similar weather. I wore a long purple coat with brown tights and brown boots. We took some photos inside in a library when we were tired of the cold, so I had a dress I got from H&M the week of the photoshoot for like $15 for that. It was solid navy and very comfortable. Here are some pics (more here <-clicky).

  • Oh yeah, and go with solids! Have your FI wear a color that looks nice with yours, but not the same color.

Here are the tips our photog sent me before our pics:

    For Both of You:
Avoid logos and distracting patters or stripes - this doesn't necessarily mean just solid colors, just take the pattern into account.
Pick colors that go well together.  (this doesn't mean you have to match, just something to think about)
Feel free to bring different outfits:  new sweaters, shoes, skirts, etc.  (the more, the merrier!)
    No gum!
Bring anything special you want:  props, jerseys, etc.

    For You:
Dresses and skirts are always a hit!
Dramatic makeup is good .. dramatic hair is not.

    For Him:
Pants usually look better than shorts - jeans, khakis, etc.
Clean out your pockets.  Leave keys, cell phone, wallet in the car or your purse.
Flip flops or nice shoes look better than tennis shoes or sneakers.

  • We did our pics in central park too!!  I wore jeans, with a black shirt, tan leather jacket and a  bright turquoise necklace.

  • You guys are the best! Thank you all for the suggestions. I didn't get out of work till midnight, so I wasn't able to explore my closet when I got home, but this certainly gives me a lot to think about.

LADY - did you have issues in Central Park with pictures? Meaning, were there too many people? Did your shoes have heels?

Bmore - I love the idea of us NOT matching but coordinating. I am going to have to dress my fiance, I think...the only shirts he owns have polo logos on them. And I'm not even exaggerating! AND I love your purple coat! Where's it from? Gorgeous!

    Thank you again!

  • i looooveee helping with outfits!!

we did one semi casual look and one dressy outfit. i carried my north face around with me since it was like 30 degrees and took it of in between shoots.

i would wear heels instead of any type of flat boot.  try to wear clothes that are fairly form fitting as baby doll-esque, drapey tops that look great in person typically do not photograph as well as a sturdier fabric.

jeans, heels, a bright sweater, and a chunky necklace for outfit #1....
a bright colored dress or a high waisted pencil skirt and tucket in top with tights and heels for outfit #2....

jewerly can really make or break an outfit! i have gotten so many compliments on the big chunky necklace i wore in our pics that i would highly recommend doing something like that which will make a statement!

definitely wear lots of eye makeup and BLUSH! i felt like i had on WAY too much blush going into our shoot, but i actually ended up looking like i had barely flushed cheeks in the picture (despite being cold).

do NOT go matchy-matchy with your colors as far as matching fiance's outfits....we attempted this during our trial run the night before and it looked SO BAD! (i had on a bright green dress and fiance tried to wear a hunter green dress shirt...it looked like vomit.)

speaking of which: my NUMBER 1 piece of advice would be to do test runs in your apartment with your outfits AND with fiance's outfits. put on everything you will wear in the picture, have fiance do the same, and stand in front of a mirror next to each other. you will immediately see what works, what doesn't, and whether or not your outfits go well with what each other is wearing.

    Butterfly, thanks! Very helpful suggestions.

I have this necklace from Kate Spade, although mine is only one row of stones: http://www.simplysoles.com/ecommerce/images/1580_medium.jpg

Do you think it would work? It's black (everything is black in my closet!!!) so maybe I should pair it with black jeans and a bright top? and heels? And then maybe a fun dress? I was going to wear this black dress, but now I'm like NO MORE BLACK!

Edit: Here's the black dress http://wantandafford.com/data/f_10/sheath_dress/little_black_dress.jpg

  • i LOVE the idea of the black jeans with a bright top and the black necklace! even though it is only one row of stones it is totally perfect.  the casual outfit is going to be so adorable! are your jeans skinny jeans??? b/c that would look super cute with high stilettos. what kind of a top are you thinking about? and what do you think FI will wear??

the black dress is super adorable!! do you have any bright colored heels you could pair with it? and patterned tights?  if you do a black dress, your fiance could wear a brighter shirt.
  • PS i had a blowout the morning of our pictures and had them loosely curl my hair and pull a small section back (see below picture). getting the blowout done meant no stress for me in drying and curling my hair, and with them doing the pull back section, i didn't touch with or mess with my hair ONCE during our shoot....also, my hair didn't fall into my face at all/block my face during pictures.  i would highly recommend doing this!!

I was thinking my Current Elliott black skinny jeans with my high black stilettos but I may need to go buy a bright colored shirt to wear. (I'm serious when I say that almost everything in my closet is black, grey or white!) I do have some bright heels actually. Maybe I will go with those and the black dress. WHY IS THIS SO HARD!

Fiance will likely wear one of his polo shirts - I love his pink gingham one, which he also has in blue (<a href="http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12268225&parentPage=family" rel="nofollow">http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12268225&parentPage=family</a>). He'll definitely wear jeans with that. Maybe we could do one dressy and he can wear a suit? We'll be in the park so I just don't want to spend too much time changing outfits!

  • Butterfly, yet again, we're kindred spirits! I'm getting my hair blown out, too! I'll see if they can add in some kind of clip. They just opened a DryBar in NYC near my apartment so I'm going there. www.thedrybar.com

  • your outfits sound 100% perfect!!!! i love black skinny jeans, you are going to look so cute!! ps my fiance wore a pink shirt for our casual look too :) we did do one quick change - it was annoying to take time to change, but we love having two totally different looks in our pictures! my fiance didn't want to go all out with the suit, so he just wore his black suit pants, a button down, a fun tie, and his suit vest. was a pinch more casual than his suit but was still very classy!

i love that you are getting a blowout too hahaha we are totally the same person!! if you aren't one to play with your hair or have your hair fall into your face the pulled back section isn't as big of a deal...it just really made a difference for me!! my girl just used some hair pins and it stayed in supertight and you couldn't see the pins at all.
  • Thank you for your help! I fuss with my hair almost constantly, so it'll be nice to have it out of my face!

So THAT'S why I like it. I am the same way - JCrew, if it fits me correctly, is my go-to. I have issues with their sizing at times, but otherwise, I'm in love.

Sucks they don't have in the UK!
