Honeymoon Help! Bora Bora or Maui and Kauai?

Fi and I are getting married Sept 2011.  We are from MA and I have always wanted to go to Hawaii but have never gotten the chance.  If we were to go to Hawaii, we would go to Kauai and stay at the Hyatt for 6 days, Maui and stay at the Four Seasons for 6 days and end the trip in Oahu.

A few days ago, we figured since we were willing to take the flight all the way to Hawaii from MA, why don't we go somewhere more exotic like Bora Bora.  So now we are faced with all these decisions.  Bora Bora is a loonnnnggggg flight.  Also, I heard there isn't much to do outside of the resort.  It looks amazing, however, and I am sure it would be a trip of a lifetime.  My FI really wants to go somewhere in the South Pacific and dosen't seem too interested in Hawaii.  On the other hand, we would be able to stay in Hawaii for 2 weeks (maybe about 10 days in Bora Bora as it is much more expensive).  I know there is a ton to do in Hawaii and I am sure the honeymoon would be amazing.

Please share your thoughts! I am so torn!

Thank you!!

  • I don't think that's a decision we can make for you! I guess one of the questions you have to answer is how much civilization do you want? How much variety do you want? There's lots to do on Bora-Bora, but you can't just pick up and go explore in the same way as you can with Hawai'i.
  • Ive never been to bora bora but i have been to both oahu and maui...and i can tell you that you wont be disappointed. if i were to pick from oahu and maui i would go with maui. its so much more relaxing in maui there's so many fun things to do. its endless....i loved maui bcus its such a romantic island .i just love it there so much that im getting married there in 2 months. good luck
  • We are from MA too and just booked our Maui and Kauai honeymoon for October :)  We were looking at Bora Bora as well... but decided we didn't want to lose a few full days traveling and wanted more adventure.  My FI's coworker just got back from Bora Bora and while they said it was unbelievably gorgeous, it was more relaxing than anything.  We wanted the choice to relax AND have adventure options, so we went with Hawaii.

Only you can decide what's right for you!!  I'm sure either place you'll have a fantastic honeymoon :)

I loved my Maui honeymoon.  It was heaven.

That being said, the one girl I have honeymoon envy for on my local board went to Bora Bora.  It looked incredible.  I really don't think you can go wrong either way.
  • We looked at Tahiti and her islands as well.  The one thing to keep in consideration is that the cost of food beyond the cost of air and hotel accomodations is VERY HIGH.  Friends of ours went to Moorea and Bora Bora for their HM - air and accomodations were in the realm of $7K plus the cost of food and excursions around $3K.

Just a piece of advise to keep that in mind as well.  We have been to both the Big Island and Maui.  We LOVE the BI for its adventure and Maui for its romance.  If it was our choice again, we would go to Hawaii again in a heart beat.

    Good luck in your decision.

  • Thank you all so much!!
  • We went to Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora for our honeymoon and had a blast. I would have to say though French Polynesia (especially Bora Bora) is good for relaxing, but there aren't too many "adventerous" things to do. We did ATV tour, jet ski, snorkeling, and spa. The rest of the time we just rested in our bungalow and soaked in the wonderful view!

I am also planning a second mini-honeymoon to Maui and we're leaving in September. Based on my planning it seems like there are more things to do in Maui if you are looking for more things to do.

That being said, I think both are excellent options, it just depends on what you want to do. Total relaxation (French Polynesia), or relax & more adventure (Hawaii)...
  • We just returned from our 12 day honeymoon in Kaua'i.  It was a beautiful island.  We decided not to go to any other islands because we wanted to spend the maximum time exploring and not in airplanes and airports.  We loved Kaua'i because we had a blend of adventure (Napali coast, hiking, waterfalls, snorkle trips, helicopter rides, farm visits, deserted beaches, etc) as well as relaxation (beach, beach and more beach).

To tell you the truth, all three places are amazing and you can't go wrong!
  • Hi there,

I am planning my honeymoon for this coming october and am seriously torn between maui & kauai and bora bora.  we can go to bora for 8 nights or hawaii for 10 night.  hawaii is almost half the price of bora.  ive heard good things about both and know i will have a great time at either.  i just dont know which to choose :(  help!

    thank you!
