Help! After-party ideas for December wedding in Chicago

The is my first ever post to the knot! My fiance &  I are having a morning wedding and an afternoon wedding reception this coming December in Chicago. Most of my extended family will be driving in from Central IL and will likely heading home after the reception, but the rest of our guests will be friends and family from out of state--mostly California--who will be staying in the city on Saturday night. Our reception will probably end around 5PM, so we're trying to come up with a casual Chicago bar that has a great back-room where we can reconvene with everyone later that evening.

We're paying for the wedding ourselves and on a tight budget, so our plan is to buy maybe a round of drinks or two and some appetizers to get things started at the bar. After that, our guests will be paying for their own drinks. We think it is fair since we are paying for our out of town guests to come to our rehearsal dinner the night before, and then to our reception. The idea is really just to get together again in a more casual atmosphere and hang out with our friends and family who are traveling a long way for the wedding.

Thoughts on a place that might work for this type of after-party? Thanks for your help! Smile

How many people do you anticipate?  And where are people staying?

Definitely use yelp.com and search for event space or party rooms.  I really wanted to do a birthday party at Matilda's - which is close to the Belmont red line.  They have a room downstairs, so you can rent it out, have your own bartender, and they have an ipod hookup.  Plus, then your guests are in a great spot if they want to check out more places or go see Comedy Sportz (a few blocks away).

Or, check out Division St. - but not as easy to get to if your guests are staying downtown.

Rock Bottom might do something or see if Howl at the Moon would do a special for you - that's such a fun place!

    Good luck and congrats!

I know Jak's Tap has a back room.  It is on Jackson in Greek Town.

The prices are pretty good if you are going to have a really small group coming to the bar.

Like some others mentioned it depends no the number of people but The Red Canary has an upstairs space with seating and a bar that overlooks the downstairs, you can reserve that space for no charge (last I checked) and set up a tab and food    http://www.theredcanarychicago.com/

Green Door Tavern lets you reserve the downstairs speakeasy area. It's really a neat space and you get your own bartender. They can do apps for you as well. It's fairly central to a lot of the loop hotels.
