We tried a lot of really amazing cakes (Chocolate with a peanut butter frosting was one of our favs) but in the end we decided on a classic; vanilla sponge cake with layers of fresh strawberries and a vanilla buttercream.  We felt like for the size of our wedding (225) we should stick to something classic that everyone would like and we worried that the richer flavors wouldn't be enjoyed by as many people.

We have decided to do two flavors. We are doing a pretty standard vanilla cake with raspberry filling. And we are also doing a queen anne pound cake with a lemon filling. We are also doing a "fake" cake. a rolled fondant cake with a piece in it for us to cut and then sheet cakes for everyone to eat (saved us a ton of money)

You dont have to do a cake. I have been to weddings where we had strawberry shortcake and it was just  as good. The great thing its that its your wedding, if you dont like cake find something that is you guys!

    Good Luck!

We are not doing a traditional cake instead we are having a dessert bar which includes cupcakes. Banana w/ mexican ganache cupcakes, chocolate w/ coconut pudding cupcakes, mini cheesecakes in an assortment of flavor, mini eclairs and cream puffs with chocolate - all from Sin and a plain vanilla cake, chocolate walnut brownie, peanut butter cookies, fruit tarts and cannolis - all from Pastiche Fine Desserts. It is way less expensive than just a cake but equally impressive display with a variety of tasty treats to tantilize the tastebuds.

We're doing two offbeat flavors for ours.  One is going to be strawberry cake with vanilla buttercream (kind of the reverse of the traditional flavors), and the other is almond cake with Bailey's filling (to. die. for.).

We're doing a dessert bar also.  My parents own a bakery so my dad will be making all of the desserts as well as my "dummy" cake. :)

We did a lemon sour cream cake (like a pound cake) with strawberries and buttercream.  There were 4 layers of cake and 3 layers from frosting in each slice.  They looked as good as they tasted!
