June 2013 Weddings

New to the board/ color question

I am new here and recently engaged as of Feb. 19, I thought I was a little crazy to start planning already for our June 29, 2013 wedding but after reading the message boards I can see I am not to early. Talked to the hall I wanted to use for our ceremony and reception today and am pretty happy that they are within our budget. The problem I am having now is that I was thinking of having a black and white wedding with the brides maids wearing black dresses, my thought was if these ladies have to go and buy a dress at least have it be something they might wear again. My mother who always has an opinion hates the idea and says black is only for funerals not weddings am I totally crazy?

Re: New to the board/ color question

  • I was a bridesmaid in my brother and SIL's wedding a year and a half ago. Their colors were mainly black and white, but they added bright pink too to break it up a little. Our dresses were black strapless cockail dresses with a small pink band below the bust line. The groomsmen wore black tuxs with pink ties.  Bro wore a white tux with a pink bow tie and SIL had a pink flower in her hair. They honestly have the most beautiful wedding party pictures. It looks very elegant, if that's what you're going for!

Im actually wearing that dress to my cousin's wedding in July! I've been a bridesmaid 5 times and this is the first time I will wear my dress again! Im excited!

  • I think black and white weddings are very pretty. I agree that pink always looks good with black and white, but I also think green does too. You will learn real quick around here- as far as colors go, we always tell you to do what makes you happy!

welcome to the board! and no, you are absolutely not planning too early. I just got rejected by my first 2 photographer choices because they are already booked for my date (June 22, 2013) It makes me sad and wish I tried to book a photographer earlier.

Welcome to the boards! Like PP have said, you are definitely not too early. In December, FI and I were turned down by a few venues because our date was booked. You'd be surprised how quickly everything books. (or at least I was!)

As for colors, I think having a black and white wedding is gorgeous! Perfect Palette had an inspiration board that was black, white and a pale grey-it was stunning. So that's always an option if you don't want to do a bright accent color.

Black and white is a very popular colour palette right now -- I'll suggest looking on Pinterest, the Knot or just a general google search to find examples and show the pictures to your mom.  Seeing how elegant it can be would probably change her mind!  When I told my FMIL that we were getting married in a barn, she just... did not get it LoL  She could not envision it at all and was picturing animals and horse manure and hay with stalls.  Once I showed her photos of the venue, she did a complete 180.

  • I think B&W is great, but if its a daytime wedding (esp in summer) I'd say why not use your BM's dresses to brighten it up hot pink is a great idea as some of the other ladies have suggested.

If its an evening wedding...black is always an elegant choice. :)

  • Congratulations on your engagement and welcome!!! No, you are not too early with your planning. As you can see from PP's comments, it is never too early to start planning as popular venues and vendors get booked very quickly. I was just telling my FI today that I'm worried our first-choice caterer will be booked by the time we book our venues - both our ceremony and reception venues only book twelve months in advance.

I'm having a daytime, outdoor wedding and I have asked my BM's to wear a black dress of their choosing. Our primary colors will be black and white but I plan to soften things up a bit by mixing in lighter colors like apple green, sunflower yellow, and bright pink. FI has not yet decided what he wants his GM to wear. In short I think black and white will look very nice no matter what time of day or year - there are so many different ways you can spin it! :)

  • Welcome! That's my date too lol!
As for the colors, I think black is perfectly fine for a wedding. I was a BM is a wedding last December and our dresses were black.
To me, black and white just seems so classy and elegant, especially when used in weddings :)

  • Last night while browsing around Pinterest I found this photo of a flower girl wearing a black dress... so cute with the yellow flats and colorful bouquet!

  • Black and white sounds like an excellent color palette!! Like the other gals have said, you can add a sash to your bridesmaid dresses to change it up a little bit. Another thing that you might want to consider (especially if your mom is worried about black being too formal or funeral-like) is the type of fabric used for the dresses...a floaty knee length black chiffon dress is going to project a totally different style than a more form fitting floor length black dress. Also, the accessories your girls wear will make a big difference in making things look like a wedding instead of a funeral. I'd say go for it.
