Help :)

Has anyone tried to close the open bar for one hour during the reception to do the traditional things, if so how was that done? and also, did you guys have open bar during the cocktail hour or started the open bar when reception was started?

would it be too tacky to have a alcoholic/ and non-alcoholic punch during the cocktail hour and start the open bar during the reception hours?

    Hi there!

I think its very normal to close the bar during the reception for even such things as the speeches!  Just ask the hall to have the bar door closed (half door that slides across the actual bar) or have the bartenders remove items off the bar and they can even put up the sign.  It is very normal and it just means "hey guests we want you to pay attention!" in a nice way ofcourse.  Also make sure your MCs give ample warning to the guests.  "Hi everyone the program is starting in 5 minutes please make your trip to the bar b/c it will be closing before that time and will remain closed until the program is complete"

We had an open bar during our cocktail hour and our reception but not a non alcoholic drink...but you could definitely do that as a signture drink ...or two signature drinks
What I would suggest about the punch is make sure that Hall staff/bartender pours those drinks...

    Goodluck!

MrsBM:  Thank you for respond. I was kind of thinking that would be tacky but good to know it is not. we were thinking about having an open bar during the cocktail hour + 1 more (like from 6-8) and close the bar down from (8-10) and reopen it from (10). would this work? did you have the open bar during the whole reception or did you close it at any point?

Yup that would sounds pretty normal/standard.

Yes we closed the bar for our entire reception program (which included our first dance, speeches etc)

It was closed for the ENTIRE reception program (there was wine on the table and champagne was passed around at the time of the toast...) but I think from the guests perspective you have to give them warning so they can go get their drinks.  What I mean to say even though the reception program is meaningful to you and your fiance and family...it may not be THAT enjoyable to your guests ;) so I'm sure they enjoy having their cocktails !

I think it is both a regional and cultural thing. I think closing it during reception activities is fine. We plan to have open bar during cocktail hour though.
