Wedding Invitations & Paper

How do I handle pre-paid postage for response card from Canada?

We live in the US, and we are inviting one guest from Canada.  I am planning to pre-stamp all my response cards (they will be postcards, not in envelopes).  Is there any way to pre-stamp a postcard that will be coming from Canada to the US?

  • I had the same problem... except that I live in Canada, and had 3 rsvp cards from the US.  Unfortunately, I couldn't get my hands on USPS stamps.  If you know anyone in Canada, they can send you some stamps in the mail.  You can also order stamps online from Canada Post (our national postal service).  Not sure if they have a minimum book of 10, or singles though.

I didn't stress too much about the fact that those 3 invites didn't have return postage.  I am hoping they understand the deliema and not judge to harsh :) You could add a personal note saying sorry you couldn't include return postage, and if they wish, they can call or email you their rsvp.

  • It might be a bit of a hassle. Canadian postage rates just went up as of January 1st, and it doesn't look like the new USA stamps including the additional postage are available online.  Honestly, it only costs $1.05 CAD to mail a letter to the USA from Canada, so it is likely no trouble for your guests at all. I am sure they will understand your situation.
  • I had 2 guests invited from foreign countries. We just emailed them when we sent our their invitations and told them they could email us their responses so they didn't HAVE to send the card back if they didn't want to. (Plus, sometimes international mail takes longer. Canada is pretty fast, but our guests were living in Israel and New Zealand, so an email was definitely the easiest way to get their responses.)

  • You can buy foreign postage at some US post offices.  I'm not sure what all countries they have, but I'm sure Canada would be at the top of the list.  You could ask when you go in to buy your other postage.

It's not necessary, though.  People understand that buying international postage isn't as simple as just including stamps.  We opted to offer an email RSVP option for our international guests, but that was more driven by slow mail service in South America than by stamps.
  • I agree with PP - I wouldn't worry about it.  I have a number of guests from out of the country (Israel mostly, but 1 in Spain and 1 in Canada).  I'm just not doing postage for them.  I have a feeling the ones from Israel probably don't even know what to do with an RSVP card/menu selection since they do weddings there very differently than ours.  Our out of country guests are mostly family and we'll probably just call/e-mail them to get the meal selection.  I'm figuring we need to explain having to pre-select the meal because I doubt they will understand it...
