Trying to reduce costs, ?'s about serving food at reception

Originally we were going to have full service catering of bbq at the wedding, but my father lost his job and I am trying to reduce the cost of everything if I can.  It will be about $500 less to have a taco bar with no full service catering than it would bbq with full service catering.  This is by no means a fancy wedding, so I am  assuming it won't be a big deal.  I wouldn't care if I had to serve myself food at a wedding...would you?  Please help, we will spend the extra money if we are going to look really bad, but dad isn't going to be able help out as much as originally planned, which means we have a lot less to work with.

  • It's your wedding and it should be a reflection of what's important to you. If your dad just lost his job, I think saving money by having a taco bar is just fine.  My guess, the people invited to your event will understand.

PS I think it's a great idea in general.

    Have a beautiful day!
  • There's nothing wrong with self service stations or buffets at a wedding.  Sounds like a fun and tasty idea to me!
  • I agree...with the other two posters, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a self-service buffet at a wedding.  I went to my friend's wedding a couple of months ago, and they had a self-service buffet.  It was all very well done, and I think everyone enjoyed getting to pick exactly what and how much of everything to put on their plates.

  • Sounds fine to me

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Tacos sound better than BBQ to me! :)
  • I think buffets are fine, and so is what you are wanting to serve!  Like PP mentioned, it gives guests a chance to pick what they want to eat, and only take what they want instead of having a plate full of something they may or may not like.
