Bored? Want to help me pick my wedding food?

We're meeting next week with the venue to firm up our menu.
Guests will have the option of choosing either beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian. From each of the 4 categories, we have to select one type of chicken, beef, fish and veggie.

Here are our options. Fiance and I are not food people, in that we have no idea what half of the stuff even is. Our venue also doesn't do tastings so we're little leery. Can you let me know what you'd like? I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!

BEEF:
New York Steak or
Prime Rib or
Filet Tenderloin

CHICKEN:
Chicken stir fry or
Grilled lemon chicken or
Chicken Keiv or
Chicken Cordon Bleu or
Chicken Da Vinci or
Chicken Scapollini

FISH:
Grilled Salmon or
2 Grilled Prawns

VEGETARIAN:
Veggie stir fry or
Lasagna

And please select 1 dessert:
Tarfo ice cream
Sherbet
Tiramisu
Cheesecake (raspberry, strawberry or chocolate topping)
Berry Martini (mixture of wild berries on ice cream)
Peach / Apple flawn
French Vanilla filled Ice Cream crepes

  • BEEF:

    Prime Rib or
    Filet Tenderloin

Prime Rib is delish, but it is supposed to be served very rare and some people can't handle that. I used to work at a dinner theater where prime rib was an option and people sent it back ALL THE TIME because they wanted it well done. I can forsee this causing problems at your wedding.

    Grilled lemon chicken or
    Chicken Keiv or

I don't do dessert so I'm no help here. Sorry.

  • Be sure you check spellings if you'll be listing each item on the RSVP card - it's Scallopini and I'm guessing it is New York Strip Steak. Oh and it's probably Peach Flan

I'd go with Prime Rib, Lemon Chicken, Lasagna, Salmon and cheesecake

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.
  • New York SteakGrilled lemon chickenGrilled Salmon or Lasagna Peach / Apple flawnFrench Vanilla filled Ice Cream crepes
  • BEEF:  Either the NYSteak or the Filet.  NOT the Prime Rib, because it's always served PINK with some fat to be cut off before eating.
    CHICKEN:  chicken scap

    FISH:  Definitely the Grilled Salmon

    VEGETARIAN:  Definitely the Lasagna

    And please select 1 dessert:
I personally would prefer the sherbet, but for a wedding, I'd choose the berry martini.  Just had that at a charity luncheon last Saturday, and it's fresh and different.  If you love cheesecake, you could choose that, but it would be redundant to have cheesecake AND wedding cake.  Do not choose tiramasu - it's good to order as a dessert when you are out to dinner, but for a large group, the dessert has to sit there before being served, and always turns out tasting like a coffee-soaked sponge.  Ditto crepes - always turns out awfully soggy.  Oh, and it's FLAN, not FLAWN.

Now, when we were showed the dinner menu choices like these INCLUDING a dessert, I asked if the WEDDING CAKE could be served later INSTEAD of the dessert course with dinner.  And that's what we did.  Because the venue's waitstaff is paid to serve JUST ONE DESSERT, they served our WEDDING CAKE, and I didn't have to pay a cutting fee nor a serving fee.   Just an idea of something you could ask for.
  • Uh, Kristin, when you go out to dinner it's not like they assemble the tiramisu fresh for you. It's always been sitting around for a while. Same deal if you order from a bakery.

OP, if you're concerned about its quality, ask for a tasting, and then you'll know what to expect.

I'm always leary of serving ice cream at a large event.  They seem to melt before I get a chance to eat it.  At least with a cake-like dessert someone can go to the bathroom, the bar or even have a quick conversation with someone from another table and not worry about they dessert being melted before they get back.

eta - I think it's odd they do not do tasting.  I do not think you should taste all the options listed above. I think you should be able to pick one beef, chicken, veggie, fish and dessert option and taste those.    Then you can make adjustments if you have to. If I'm spending 10's of thousands on food I want to make sure it tastes good.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
