Can you provide a little more information about what bakers/bakeries you have already ruled out due to cost? It's hard to provide suggestions without knowing what your budget constraints, concerns, etc. have been.

Maybe try Michelle's Patisserie, I'm not using her but I heard she is pretty cheap.

We used a San Marcos-based independent baker for my daughter's June wedding at Red Corral Ranch in Wimberley.  Never have I tasted more delicious cake!  The total cost for a groom's carrot cake and bride's 3-layer wedding cake (both served 200) was as astonishing $300.  No that's NOT a typo.  The carrot cake was very simply decorated: piped frosting around the edges in the groom's college and grad school's colors  & cream cheese frosting.  The bride's cake had two chocolate tiers and a middle marble tier, all shaped in squares and frosted in white buttercream.  It was decorated with wide satin ribbon around each layer, which I provded, and topped with fresh flowers, which we ordered from the florist.  He also did a darling bridesmaids luncheon cake frosted in buttercream and decorated with frosting sunflowers that served 30 for $30. His name is Dwight Scheider and his # is 512-396-2722. I recommend him without reservation!

We're ordering simple cakes from Whole Foods (5th & Lamar) and supplementing with cake balls from Austin Cake Balls.  Well under $300 for all.

In North West Austin there's a little bakery off Anderson Mill called Dream Bakery. We're using them, and our cake will be just about $400 for a three-tiered cake. Plus, their food is amazing. I'm not sure where they're from, somewhere in Eastern Europe I think, but they have a whole bunch of different options if you'd like. We're going with a butter cream frosting and this absolutely decadent fluffy vanilla filling. I feel like I've ordered a cake from Simon Lee, but for half the price!
