terrible trial - do i still have to pay?

need advice!

i went for a hair/makeup trial the day of a friends wedding (thinking it would be nice to put a trial to "good use") and i alotted 3.5 hours before her ceremony. It took so long to do my hair, there was only 30 minutes left to do the makeup part of the trial. the hair was blah -- i didn't like either of the 2 styles she tried and it took her 3 hours! which only left 30 minutes for makeup, and it was terrible.. and not even just for lack of time, the colors she used were not flattering and it looked like my 8 year old cousin did it. even my FI said i do a better job with makeup!

so here's the deal - she charges $200 for a trial for both hair + makeup, but if i went for only hair trial it would have been $125. because i felt short on time, and the makeup came out terrible i only want to pay her the $125 for the hair trial. (and i don't even like the idea of paying for trials at all...  but i live in nyc where everything is expensive) -- is that totally messed up? i'm definitely not going to book her, and really, what is she going to do, but i don't want to be a complete jerk because i believe in karma.. at the same time, i feel like she was a novice and untalented and completely overpriced.

what would you do?

Re: terrible trial - do i still have to pay?

  • I believe in karma too, so I would probably just pay it.  Or, I would be honest with her and tell her you weren't happy and you don't believe you should have to pay the full price.  Maybe she'll comeback and agree that you should pay a lesser amount.  Unfortunately, that is the risk you take when you agree to do the trial and pay for it.  With your next artist, be sure to get references, look at pictures, etc and that should weed out the bad ones.

Even when it's hard, I believe that honesty is the best policy.

I don't believe in that karma stuff, but I do believe in honesty. Just tell her how you feel & go from there. I agree that if you aren't satisfied with what she gave you, you shouldn't have to pay her. I'm curious, though. Wouldn't you normally pay at the end of a trial? So, are you asking if you shouldn't have paid what you did, or is your stylist billing you after?
  • I hated my first hair and makeup trial and also felt very rushed.  I still paid her in full but I did not tip (and obviously did not book with her).  I felt that was fair.

Honestly, I'd probably just pay in full and chalk it up to a lesson learned.  In addition, I feel the time to complain and negotiate was at the trial and now that you've received her services without complaint, you owe her the full amount.
  • That sucks.  I would have to agree with paying her, she did not take any customers for all that time and even if she sucked I would pay her. I would just be honest and say that you will not be booking her for her services.
From what you mentioned also above it like she was the one that came up with the suggestions for hair.
I would moving forward look at others work, look at reviews and make sure you have a clear vision of what look you want and take pictures.  It can be very difficult to some stylist to just come up with something.
