Ryan Seacrest's comments on Top40 about BMs

I was listening to the top 40 this morning on my way to my cardio class and Ryan Seacrest was talking with some people from the movie Bridesmaids.  He said that he has seen brides make their BMs purposely look bad so that they don't "steal her thunder".  I didn't listen to the rest of it because I just found it to be such a ridiculous statement,

What do you girls think?  Have you ever seen a bride purposely try to make her BMs look like crap?

I can't say that I have.  Every WP I've seen looked awesome and it definitely didn't take any attention away from the bride.

Have you seen the movie "27 Dresses"?  One of the characters in the movie makes the same comment.

I'm positive I've never been to a wedding where the brde PURPOSEFULLY made her BMs look bad to keep them from upstaging her.  But I have been to weddings where I was, quite frankly, appalled at the bride's choice of dresses -- like picking a style that looked really good on a few of the girls, but were really horrible for other body types.  I think sometimes bride's might be a little bit inconsiderate when it comes to picking flattering dresses....not on purpose, just because I think some brides care more about everything "matching" than about making their BMs comfortable.

  • I think that idea comes straight out of the 80's when you look back and see all those big poufy concoctions that in no way could have looked good on anybody. But, I think for the most part, brides want their bm's to look good. I know I do. I would rather have great looking bm's in my pictures than have them look horrible just to make me feel better. I admit, I have 2 bm's who are going to look gorgeous in the dress I really want my girls to wear, (I picked a universally flattering gown that looks great on my plus size bm's too, no bridezilla here) and it kinda makes me a little jealous, but why on Earth would I purposely make them look bad and feel uncomfortable just cuz I feel a little less than stellar standing next to them? It's an insulting way to think of a bride, and it terrifies prospective bm's lol
  • Not me! I was in my FSIL wedding last Aug and we got to chose the dress we liked as a group. Same with my girls. It was loved by everyone so that I knew they loved what they bought.

The way I see it, if you make your girls "unattractive" theyre only ruining your pictures and in the end reflecting poorly on you for choosing what they look like.

People are inherently stupid. Weddings make it painfully obvious -- KevinandMonica

  • I haven't seen this happen but I personally don't like when brides make their bridesmaids wear their hair a certain way. That's the only complaint I have- this is probably the fifth time I complained on the knot about my friend who made her bridesmaids get updo's. It was expensive and I still don't know why we were asked to wear out hair a certain way.

  • I haven't either, to me the whole WP should be beautiful and the bride just adds the best and final "pop" to it all.
  • I've never personally known a bride to purposely try to make her BMs look bad.  I did choose a bridesmaids dress that's on the more conservative side (floor length, loose chiffon but strapless) though b/c my BMs happen to be gorgeous and without them even trying to, it's easy for them to look too "hot" or however you want to term it, by just wearing something form fitting and/or shorter--they're very lucky ha.  Of course I didn't want them to upstage me but I also just want the whole look for the evening to be "pretty" rather than anything else.

  • Every BM in the weddings I've been to have had dresses they can wear again and again. That is what I did for my MOH and BM/FSIL. I wanted something inexpensive and easy to wear somewhere else (which they can! its strapless and would look amazing at a nice, fancy restaurant)
