Is this really common?

So FI and I have finally set a date after almost 6 years together.  We were thinking about just having a small private beach ceremony with the officiant being someone really special to me. Some frinds have been asking if there will be  any invites.  Our first reaction was "it will just be a small beach ceremony beacause money if tight" Now they are saying that we could do a potluck. FI and myself just don't understand this.  We are new to the area that we are living, they tell us this is common now. Before we moved here we had never heard of this. So now to decide if we want to do this or not. I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this???  We are really connected to the people who brought this up.

I hadn't heard of it until I got on TK and I would not do a potluck. That's the consensus here as well. Your wedding should be a hosted event with the reception a thank you to the guests who came to the ceremony. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, but it should be hosted by you, not provided by your guests. If they bring it up again, just say, "Thanks for the suggestion, but FI and I really want to host the reception for you all."

ETA: Re-reading your post, do you mean you're not inviting anyone, just having a ceremony you an FI and that's it? If so, I would just tell them that, even if they pressure you to invite people by having a potluck.

  • Potlucks are for church functions and should never ever be done for a wedding.

Well I am glad to hear that I am not the only one to think that potlucks are not for weddings. Although I still keep hearing that they are becoming real popular. We are not having one. We have actually decided to do a double wedding on the beach with FI sister and her FI. Then we are all going on a cruise for our honeymoon. We are all older couples and have been married before. So a simple sunset beach ceremony, followed by a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant. We are getting married on a Thursday at sunset 5:45 so it will just be the 4 of us, officiant ( dear friend) and the photographer. Maybe just a couple of other friends. Really getting excited for this now.
