Might be a stupid question...

But on the marriage license do you sign your new name or your maiden name? I need to practice how I'm going to sign my new name. lol

    You sign your current name. You will be asked if you are keeping your name or taking  his.

    I can't speak for other states, but in California we signed the marriage license when we got it at the court several weeks before the wedding. So I signed my maiden name because it was the only one I legally had. After our ceremony, our officiant and a witness will sign it too and then the officiant mails it in. So there wasn't a time or place for me to sign anything other than my maiden name. Like PP said, you can fill in what your new name will be, but it's not a signature line.

    In Michigan...you sign the license after the ceremony and you sign it your new name or what you want your legal name to be.

    So maybe ask around your local board, or just go ahead and have fun practicing your new name :)

    I just filled out the application tonight! They just ask you what name you are taking when you fill out the form.  I paused when I went to sign it but my thought process was legal document = legal name = maiden name at the moment.  They also asked my FI what his last name was going to be, didn't know they did that and we paused for a second or two.

    You don't sign anything when you buy them here. But when signing the marriage license you sign with your new name. So, if you are taking your husband's name it would be new last name. At least where I am at.

    I signed my maiden name to get the license. I think I sign the actual license directly after the ceremony... so that would be with the new name (if you are changing it). Not sure though!
