NWR: Current annoyances... Movie remakes

Totally insignificant, but I feel like venting about this ...

I'm sick of movie remakes. I had an open mind about the Footloose remake coming out in October, but then I saw the trailer and my reaction was "Ugh, they destroyed it." And then I hear that they are going to make a new version of Dirty Dancing, and I was strangely furious about it. I really feel that the people in charge of making these movies shouldn't go about remaking everything in an effort to appeal to "our" generation. I think it would be better for them to just re-release the originals in theaters, and if the young people can't appreciate it then it's their loss. 

Are there any movies you would be angry if they tried to remake?

    I just read the The Great Gatsby is being remade, again.  I'm fine with it because there is a subject (book) behind the movie which will continually be reinterpreted.

    I doubt I will ever see the new Footloose or Dirty Dancing movies.  Zero interest.

    Aw I love Dirty Dancing! I know what you mean, agape, usually remakes are no good! Although I sometimes enjoy remakes of musicals. One that comes to mind is The Music Man. I liked that remake!

    I think there has been talk for several years about a My Fair Lady remake.  It's just pitiful to even suggest such a thing!

    I pretty much dislike ANY remake... I think Hollywood is running out of good ideas..

    I just would not be interested at all in a Top Gun remake. You just won't find anyone as awesome as Maverick and Goose.

    DH hated the idea of the Karate Kid remake and refused to watch it.  I thought it sounded like a good concept and really not much like the original.

    I may watch Footloose  remake when it comes out on video.  DH loved the original and I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to see that one.

    Hollywood is running out of ideas so they do remakes. IMO remakes aren't nearly as good.

    By the way, I just saw an ad for the Smurfs movie and while that is technically not a remake, they remade the characters - the Smurfs.  They just aren't the same.  Sometimes I think technology can be a detriment to the original movie/show.  I know that watching the old Smurfs from the 80s would seem old school now, but the new Smurfs should have been the next generation of the old Smurf characters, not the reinvention of the old characters IMO.

    I read somewhere recently that they are going to make a movie out of Captain Planet.  Somehow I think that's better in my memory of getting up at 6:30 every morning and going downstairs with my sister to watch it.  Now it would just be cheesy.

    I think the movie I hate the remake the most is ... The Parent Trap. Just not a fan of Lindsay Lohan's character in that movie.  I do like the parent actors, but I like Haley Mills (I think that's her name) so much better.  I also personally REFUSE to watch the re-make of Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly.  She's just not the right actress for Elizabeth  Bennett.  The BBC version rocks, why try to re-invent the wheel?!!?  I also don't like the remake for The Music Man.  I'm in LOVE with the original.  The actors just had so much screen chemistry (not talking about love necessarily) and I just don't think that it can be done again.  And I really don't like Matthew Broderick in general, so, I guess I'm just biased!  

    Ah, remakes.  What Hollywood / Universal does when they've run out of ideas.  Even Texas Chainsaw Massacre was re-done ... why?  Wasn't the 1970's version scary enough?  Oh, it wasn't "sexed" up enough.  Oh well.  The old version is better, if you're a scary movie kind of person! :-)

    I agree with kelly about the Parent Trap. 

    I don't think I could watch a remake of Dirty Dancing.  I love the original too much!

    If they remade any of the classic movies like Singin in Rain or ones like that, I wouldn't be happy. Honestly, I don't like knowing when they are going to make a movie period. For me it takes away the magic of it just kind of appearing and being surprised. Once I see a trailer is when I make my judgement on it. I never saw the original dirty dancing but with what is considered dirty dancing now, I'm kind of scared.

    <div>You MUST see the original Dirty Dancing. It is an American classic. Patrick Swayze is so incredible in that movie, he was the last real triple threat in Hollywood. When you consider the kind of dancing that was "scandalous" then versus what is pushing the limit now, I agree that it's scary. At least back then the dancing was actual dancing, and not just dry humping in public.</div>

    I'll have to disagree with you, kellya01--while I agree that the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice rocks, the remake is one of my absolute favourite movies ever. I find the cinematography breathtaking, especially the dancing scene where other dancers fade in and out of view, the scene where she sits on the swing and seasons change, the countryside, the rain, and the early morning meeting with Darcy...gorgeous.
