  I would send them seperate, since it has nothing to do with Christmas.  In a weird way some people might associate getting the Save the Date with the Christmas card as getting invited to your wedding is their Christmas gift.

  I agree with cfas - by the time you send Christmas cards it will be far too close to your wedding to be sending STDs.

  I think they should be sent separetly & if you are doing STD's they should be sent out now. The point of them is to allow people to make arrangements to get time off from work if needed & travel arrangments. No point in sending them out in December & then 3 weeks later they are getting the invitation.

  While I wouldn't consider it tacky, they may get lost in the Christmas shuffle.  But cfas is correct in that STD should go out now, if you want to do them.  And your invites go out 6-8 weeks before.  Basically you would be sending a STD a month before you send your invites.

  Yeah if you want to do Save the Dates they should go out right now, Christmas would be too late.

  We sent ours out with Christmas Cards. We figured that in our stage in life, anyone who is getting a Christmas card is invited to the wedding (which is true- we already had a preliminary guest list), and so we made a Christmas-themed combo card/STD. It went over really well and saved us the hassle of having to do both cards and STDs separately. For a June wedding, they went out 7 months beforehand. 

  
  

  However, other PPs are correct, if your wedding is in March, you should be sending STDs now, not Christmas. It's pointless to send STDs at Christmas time only to be followed in a week or two by the formal invite.

  I'm getting married on March 16th and our STD's should be here this week. We're sending them ASAP.

  Our STD were our Christmas cards, and it went over quite well… but we are getting married on a holiday weekend and sent the STD 10 months in advance.

  
  

  No point in sending out save the dates that close to the wedding, shortly thereafter you'll be sending out the actual invitations. LOL Save your money and skip that step.

  While it's not specifically "rude" or "tacky," it could be risky to do this because many people don't keep Christmas cards or anything included in them.
  
  I also tend to think wedding information needs its own prominence-for example, let's say someone else in your family also has an occasion to celebrate, like a graduation.  While it's more convenient to you, perhaps, to put everything in the same envelope, you run the risk that at the other end something gets jumbled/lost/misunderstood.
  
  So don't use a Christmas card as your save-the-date.  If you feel the need to send save-the-dates, do it separately from a Christmas mailing.
