Engagement Party Ideas

We got engaged on June 25th, 2011! My mom is throwing us an engagement party on August 28th and is confused as to what goes on at engagement parties. I have never been to one so I haven't been much help to her with it.

Are we supposed to have games?
Is there usually a DJ?
She put the time for 4 hours, is that too long?
Should we bring a camera to take pictures?

I want to help her because she doesn't know, but I don't either. Any help would be amazing, thanks!

Our Engagement Party is this weekend coming up and we are having a Hawaiian Luau theme. We wanted it to be a laid back, fun theme. We are not having games, no DJ, we don't have a strict time to leave and you should definitely have a camera on hand. Good Luck and Congrats!

First off congratulations on your engagement!

Our engagement party was a cocktail party held at home with hors d'oeuvres. Everyone just mingled and socialized, and my dad and DH each gave a toast. We also announced our bridal party and handed out save-the-date magnets (since everyone who is invited to the engagement party also needs to be invited to the wedding)

My mom and MIL had some of the food catered and prepared other things on their own. We had beef wellington, proscuitto wrapped melon, baked brie with apples, tomato and mozzarella, fruit platter, shrimp cocktail, and chocolate dipped strawberries and a cake for dessert. Since it was a cocktail party there was a signature cocktail which was a pink lemonade martini, various wines, champagne, and bottled beer. There was also a champagne punch and a non-alcoholic punch and bottles of water out.

It was a great time, and we didn't have a dj or any games. I don't think there should ever be games at an adult party as most people get uncomfortable and it can ruin the mood of how things are flowing naturally. There was an ipod playing in a dock in the main area, but no dj since our party was thrown in someone's home. If yours is going to be at a hall or a restaurant somewhere, I think a dj would be an option, but they can get expensive. Most dj's run between $800-$2000 to play at an event. Check your local board for recommended cheap dj's.

We recently had a mad hatter themed engagement party. We had everyone wear a super creative hat, most of which were homemade and we even had a ball pit for people to take pictures in as a play of the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland. Check out the pictures below.

Engagement parties vary. Some people choose to have formal parties with champaign toast and beautiful flower center pieces but as you can see above we decided to have an informal party to celebrate our engagement. It is totally up to you. The engagement party has the least rules of all of the wedding festivities. Hope this helps. Best of luck with you party. xoxo
