Heart rate.

My doctor recently told me that she doesn't want my heart rate above 150 when exercising because of my hyperthryroid. I can't remember what mine gets to but I feel like that is low for intense exercise. So much for my fat burning plan:(

So what is your heart rate during a good cardio work out?

eta- that is supposed to be 150-175.

Re: Heart rate.

  • My heart rate is anywhere between 130 and 170 when I do cardio. The stationary bike it stays around 130 and the eliptical it can go anywhere in that range depending on how hard I'm pushing myself. Running it is always up in the 160's.
  • Im usually at about 160-168 during the height of my workout.

  • I am in the 180 area but it is because I was restricted from exercising for the past 3 months until 2 weeks ago so I am completely out of shape :(.

It depends on what I do. Exercise dvds usually don't make my heart rate go higher than 150. During spinning, it's been known to go into the 170s .
  • It's going to be different for everyone depending on age. Here's a little bit of info about it from AHA:

  • I have a heart condition - Sinus Ventricular Tachycardia.

It used to make my heart race for no particular reason. I think it was clocked at 230 bpm while sitting down at one point.

However, while that has been "cured" (though, it can return at any time, dun dun dun), my heart rate is still a bit faster than a normal persons. When I am exercising it goes up to about 200.
  • I've been using a heart rate monitor for the last two years.

When I am running a full-speed 5K, it can easily get into the 180s or 190s.

When I'm doing a long run at a slower pace, I try to keep it in the 160s.

    Elliptical/biking/aerobics, it's in the 140s-150s range.

The highest I've ever seen it was 202 during a speed plyometrics workout.

  • Isn't it once you're over a certain percentage for your body, its pointless to work that hard? Meaning, you've already hit your highest rate?

My heartrate is anywhere from in the 140-180 range, depending on where I am at in my workout, I do intervals more often than not. Even when I do weights it floats between 130-170.
  • I'd say your best bet would be to invest in a reliable heart monitor and play around with some different exercises to see how your body responds.
  • I just got a heart monitor and am learning about it's awesomeness.

  • I should say, too, that at this point, I'm doing almost strictly fat burning, with a little muscle stuff worked in, but not much at all. If I was doing an all out cardio building workout, it would be much higher.

  • laboheme- I was just diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia last week. If you don't mind my asking, did you end up taking medication for it, or just live with it?

  • Maybe I'll try the heart monitor... everyone is talking about them these days.

Just FYI--the "fat burning zone" is a myth. Generally, with cardio exercise, harder is better. Here's an article: http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/The-Myth-of-the-Fat-burning-Zone.htm

  • According to my spin instructor, for women 100% should equal 226 minus your age. So for me, 90% of max is 161, which is about what I hit at the height of a good spin class. I don't usually wear my HRM other than spin class - occasionally on a hike, and I hit about the same 90% rate at full exertion. Another measure to watch for is how quickly your heart rate drops when you are in a recovery phase of the workout.

  • Is your hyperthyroid being treated? I have Graves disease and until it was under control my heart raced so I took a beta blocker for that inconvenience. Now that it has been treated, I have no medical heart rate restrictions. I would think that this is a temporary thing for you. I do however train with a heart rate monitor and my heart varies depending on whether I am swimming, biking or running and also on the distance. All cardio is not alike for heart rate.

  • Trifury I do have graves disease- I am going to send you private message in a minute.

  • You maximal heart rate, on average, should be 220-age. This is your MAX, when you work out, you should target max 80% of that. If your MD is saying no more than 150, follow it. Also, when you do cardio, if you run 5 miles in 10 minutes or in 60 minutes, you burn the same amount of calories. If you increase the resistance, it will obviously change that. And as the pp said the fat burning zone is a bunch of BS. So it is entirely possible to burn the same amount of calories and keep your heart rate under 150, it will just take you longer.

The "normal" range is 60-100, but some people normally fall just out of that range. So 110 isn't anything to worry about, as long as the tyroid issues are being treated effectively.

  • KK- I just sent you a response to your message.
  • I'm usually around 175-185. My anaerobic threshold is around 186, so I try to keep it around there, going up and down with intervals.
