Changing my status from lurker to poster....

Hey everyone. I'm countrygirl1108. I've lurked a little bit but I've decided to come out of the woodwork.

I'm 19 and in my first year/sophomore year (skipped a year to save myself some cash) of college in Florida. I'm studying Communication Sciences and Disorders and will be getting my Masters in Speech Therapy eventually. I want to work with kids with disabilities.

My boyfriend and I have been together for about 2 years, although we broke up for a month inbetween high school and college so our anniversary is technically in September of 2011. We're currently long distance. He lives in our home state of New Jersey. Starting in May we'll be living together for my entire summer break. I'm very excited to take that step in our relationship.

We're nowhere near engaged.... thank God. My best friend, who's 18, got married in February of 2012 to her military husband. I was a bridesmaid, which was very fun! They put together the wedding in two months so I found this site then to help look up ideas with her. I always wanted to join but since I'm not engaged, I thought I wouldn't fit in. But then I found this board. I hope you all accept me :)

Mashed potatoes are my favorite, although I love fries too. I do not have any furbabies but I have basically adopted my boyfriend's pug, if you'd like to see his furbaby!

Re: Changing my status from lurker to poster....

  • Hi! You seem level headed, and I like that you clearly lurked since you knew some of the 'typical' questions that get asked. : I don't post on the boards very often anymore, but I still lurk occasionally, in case you're wondering who the heck I am :p What drew you to your undergraduate field of study? Is it required for a Masters in speech therapy? How did you decide on a career path?

  • Ugh, I'm posting from my phone, which doesn't appear to be letting me separate my post into paragraphs. Sorry about that!

  • I just read your intro post, countrygirl, and your story about the sign hitting your car makes me mad on your behalf. It is probably too late but it would have been nice if you could have sued the pants off that trucking company.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • It's a nice area. There's a lot to do and, again, gotta love the weather. I know my boyfriend would never move down here though. It's way too warm for him.

  • Awesome! I'm closer to the east coast, probably about 1 1/2 2 hours from you. My family was originally from Jersey too and I still go back from time to time. I love it, but the beach is so hard to give up year round : Good luck in school, and I hope you'll stay a while.

I feel like a lot of people in Florida are from Jersey! The beach is hard to give up. I always text my Jersey friends when it's really cold there and say like "Oh I'm just heading to the beach to do some studying" and they get all jealous. But then they text me when it's nice there and smoldering hot here so I guess it works out. Thanks :]
  • Hello new person! You seem so nice and normal (yay!). So is a speech therapist different from a speech pathologist? One of my mom's best friends is a speech pathologist.

Also, I'm glad you got on board with Harry Potter, the books/movies are fantastic!

  • Oh hey Country Girl! I like your name! I almost chose LilCountryGal for myself, but went with Texas instead :P. I too have to admit though, when I read that you were 19 I thought perhaps you might be itchin' for the hitchin', but color me impressed. You sound very mature, and your further posts just go on to prove it, imo.

I live near a rather large military base (north of Austin, technically) and I've made a few friends with gals who are married to military men - a lot of them around your friend's age when they married. Since the military doesn't recognize anything else other than marriage, if you want to stay with BF or FI, he has to become DH. Sadly, I think this forces a lot of people into marriage before they are ready. While FI isn't a military man himself, he is employed by the military, civilian side, and for the last 3 years he's gone TDY several times for a couple months at a time. I couldn't imagine the year long separations though. His parents were both military and man, I really respect them for it.

I think it is so noble that you're going into such a tough field of work because of your brother. I'm an elementary school teacher, and I've seen how much a dedicated speech therapist can do for children. My hat is off to you for that. I'm glad you decided to come out of lurker-dom! Welcome welcome!

Haha! Glad I could share a phrase with you! I love saying it. It is just fun to say.

It makes me so happy to hear that you want to work with elementary aged children. I'm a first grade teacher (will be moving to Pre-K next year!) and I have to say, even though it is work, I do enjoy what I do, and once I get to my "job" it doesn't really feel like one. (Well, some days are better than others!) It is always good to have people in schools who want to be there - a few of my co-workers don't seem to want to be there... and they almost act as if they children annoy them. It is frustrating to see that, to say the least.

And yes, I would say helping to take care of your brother has probably made you grow up quickly, or at least accept some more mature aspects into your personality. I'm only 5 years older than you, so someone who is 30+ might disagree, but I think if you typically have a good head on your shoulders, you can usually find the mature thing to do if you stop and think about it, regardless of age. Perhaps doing the mature thing gets easier with time? (duurrr. LOL).

I'm only 5 years older than you, so someone who is 30+ might disagree, but I think if you typically have a good head on your shoulders, you can usually find the mature thing to do if you stop and think about it, regardless of age. Perhaps doing the mature thing gets easier with time? (duurrr. LOL).

I can't wait to work with kids! I can't believe that some of your coworks are like that. That's so sad :( My oldest brother is a teacher (history) and doesn't really like children so he teaches high schoolers instead. Why don't they just do that? That would frustrate me beyond belief as well.

I agree. I mean I have friends who are older than me who make some pretty rash decisions and I have friends younger than me who make excellent ones. It's all about being level headed and looking at the situation from all angles before you make a decision. I also think a lot of people use age as a scapegoat for doing immature things. But that's a different topic all together.

Because high schoolers will call you on your BS. Little ones don't understand that teachers aren't suppose to yell at you and play on their phone while you cut and paste an art project (yes, I've seen 'teachers' do this).

Oh man, this topic. Yeah, I know a lot of people who do exactly this - even now that they are in their mid 20s. It drives me insane. Or when others use it as an excuse for someone else. I'd be rich if I got a dime everytime my mom would say "Oh, she is just young." when my little sister would do something utterly stupid, and she is only a year younger than you are. I don't think she has any realistic plans for the future even, because the last time I checked "marrying a rich guy and staying home" doesn't qualify. I think my parents are partly to blame though. Since she is the youngest they were far less strict with her than my older sister and myself, and because of that, she has never had to take responsibility for her actions. I think this all ties in with being mature and growing up.

The biggest change from my 24 year old self and my 19 year old self is probably better control of my emotions. Perhaps I've just toughend up over the years, lol. However, I know I still do immature things, but I think we all do from time to time. Sometimes you ignore that level headed side.

  • I agree that growing up with your brother has probably helped you mature. I see it with BF and his younger sister too. BF was 2 when his brother was born with Down Syndrome, and I think he had to learn early how to be a little more independent than most kids his age. His sister just turned 21 (which makes me feel really old, because I remember when she turned 10... haha), and while she had a few of those 'teenage' moments in HS, she has always been pretty mature, especially when it comes to big decisions. I used to work with young adults with intellectual disabilities, and I also often saw this in the siblings of my clients. :)

That's very true. They just don't know any better.

The teenagers my brother works with just never want to do anything. He is a teacher at a private school and teaches mostly AP/honors students who feel like they don't have to do any work and will just by purely on brains. I was one of those students though so I can't complain too much. Although I actually did my work! He switches next year to teaching regular classes and he's excited for that.

I hate that phrase "just young". That's just allowing people to mess up repeatedly without making them learn a lesson. Everyone does immature stuff sometimes, I agree. I think it's the frequency that you do the immature things that shows how mature/immature you are.

Exactly. You have to learn to be more independent because your parents and other adults in your life are more focused on the handicapped child, although they should be more focused on that child because that child needs more focus (something I had to learn when I was around 13 and wondering why I didn't get any attention). My brother and your BF's sister are about the same age :]
