Passport problems

Hi,
I would really appreciate advice on this dilemma. I just realized that my passport expires around the time my fiancée and I plan to return from our honeymoon (we haven't booked yet) so  I went to renew my passport. I haven't completed the application yet, though, because it occured to me that, since I will be making a legal name change after marriage (I'm hyphenating) would I have to renew my passport again  because of the name difference? I would really prefer to not have to pay the $150 passport renewal fee twice in a short period. But even if I suck it up and pay the double fee, will I have trouble getting back in the country if I have a different name than i have on my passport when i return ( since there wont be time to re-renew after the wedding before the honeymoon). Thanks so much for your feedback! I figure surely other brides have been in this boat.

Re: Passport problems

  • Renew your passport now with you current last name. There is no renewal fee to change your name after your honeymoon if it's within a certain amount of time from you original renewal.

Once you have come back from you honeymoon and you have your marriage license back from the court house (you can not legally change to married name without having your marrige license) then you can submit the paper work to change you name to you married name on passport.  All forms  amd info on name changing and what is required to do so can be found on http://www.tsa.gov/

This exactly. Renew now under your maiden name. You can change your name for free within 1 year of the renewal.

  • Thanks so much for your help everyone! I love these forums - you guys are the best!

  • I am pretty sure when you leave the country the other countries most of the time require your passport to have an experation date of at least 6 months out. So I don't think you could wait to renew it anyway.

This exactly. Renew it now.  Don't risk getting turned back at the border. The country needs proof that you can get back into the USA :)

P.S. You Americans are so lucky that the gov. lets you change your name on your pp for free. Us Canadians have to pay and go through the application all over again!
