Help - MOB Dress

Ok so my mom decided she didn't want to spend money on a dress for the wedding. So she bought some fabric on clearance - gold - think it's like tapestry fabric. And she made a dress for herself - she can sew really well but the style and fabric are terrible. The dress adds 10 years and 20 pounds. Do I tell her or let her wear it or ahhhh help?

So the dress is finished? Is your mom really conscious about her appearance? This is always a very delicate subject that is not popular around here. But you know your mom best. If you think she'll be upset later when she looks back and realizes the dress was completely unflattering, then maybe make a suggestion about some modifications she can make on the dress. You don't want your mom to get offended and defensive because she feels you're calling her dress ugly so be very careful with this.

If this were my mom, I would have to tell her it's not the most flattering look on her. My mom doesn't have great fashion sense and prefers that people tell her when she's not looking her best. She gets pretty upset if no one tells her the truth about how she looks. KWIM? If your mom is like mine, I'd make a suggestion to her. If not, don't bother.
  • Here is a suggestion...if you have a dress fitting coming up (or can figure out another non-obvious way to do this) invite your Mom to come with you and suggest she bring her dress so you can see how it looks together (for photo purposes). And then actually take a couple pictures. We took pictures of the dresses I tried on and it really helped me to decide on the one that was the most flattering for my figure. Maybe your Mom will see the same thing and then can make some alterations. Just an idea. I recently looked back at photos from my first wedding and wow...I should have done this with my Mom back then! Those photos need to burn for more reasons than one!! LOL Good luck

  • I agree if you can talk to her and tell her its unflattering and help her fix it, it will go over better than its ugly.  My mom is always wanting 2nd and 3rd opinions on dresses since she hates how most make her look.  You still have time and she can always find something on sale at the department stores at this point if she needed to do a full replacement.

This is a great idea. If I just tell her it looks bad on her then she's gonna flip out on me. Thanks for the advice ladies - I am going to try and get her to do pictures in it with my dress. I think if she sees it in pictures she will realize that it is not flattering.

  • Hope it goes well and that she'll have time to get (or make) another one!! If it was my mom, I'd tell her that I like seeing her in ______ (different fabric, different length, different color) and compliment on how she looks in _______ (whatever I suggested). My mom is senstive but at the same time she would be horrified if she knew she didn't look good in something.
