What surprised you the most money-wise??

I'd be interested in hearing other knotties opinion on this....

When you started your planning, what vendor/vendor type surprised you the most with their costs??  Either becuase it was alot more expensive than you imagined OR because it was less than you imagined?

For me I'd have to say it was either photography or entertainment.  In both cases I was surprised at the wide range of prices.  I found REALLY cheap DJs on the net, and they alot of them even offered me a lower price when I called.  I found a ton of photographers that just take pictures and give you all the photos on a DVD.  Then on the other hand, I found some photographers that offer very cool products and seemed almost like artists with cameras.... but wow did that cost alot.  It was almost the same to find a non-cheesy DJ who didn't want to bring out his tackly light show and turn my reception into a club.

Let me hear what shocked you!!

I think is what surprised me the most was the price of a nice sit down meal. We actually ended up getting a deal b/c we were quoted an incorrect price from a few years prior (yeah, they hadn't updated things) so they honored the price we were quoted.

Catering and bar package prices are ridiculious!  I'm still stuggling to find something that will work for us.

Dresses - I was actually suprised how many reasonably priced dresses I can find.  I was expecting many to be over $1000.  I was happy to find some high quality dresses I really liked for $600-700 or less.  I'm not done shopping yet though! :)

the food!  catering prices in Columbus seem extreme.  I was a bit jealous when I found out a girl from my office was getting hers in Zanesville for $10 per person.

I was surprised at how much adding an open bar will jack the price up by a good $4,000 and up!  It's crazy how much these places charge for alcohol.  I think if I had known how much that costs I would have looked more into finding a venue that will let us bring our own, but nonetheless, I'm still happy with my venue.

I also wasn't prepared for how much it would cost for all things paper.  That's why I just eventually found a design I liked and re-created it on photoshop.

I was surprised at how expensive catering and alcohol was. We thought $3000 was going to be enough for open bar to last most of the night, as my side mostly drinks wine and a little beer. We knew his side and our friends would drink, but we didn't think most of my father-in-law's side would drink double shots of Scotch the first 2 1/2 hours- at that time almost reached our $3000 cap and we decided to up it to $4000. That got us through to the last hour and half, when at that time we switched to cash bar. Oh well... It kept the party going and made a difference.

We paid almost the same amount for the bar as we did for the caterer :-/  (too be fair, our venue fee wasn't much at all, it's really through the bar that they make money, and they are very upfront about costs, but yea, still shocking).

Like Cassandra, I was so suprised I found my dress for $640.  I prepped myself for a $1200 cap, thinking I wasn't going to find anything I like under $1000, but I was happily suprised :)

Cost of linens, dear lord.  Like Missy, our cater flubbed and put white linens in the contract for no extra charge by mistake.  I really wanted another color, but we had 25 large tables and I couldn't justify spending $$$ to RENT LINENS when we could have white for free.  Oh well, I think it still looked really nice.

My bouquet was just under $200.  jesus christ, I about died when I got the quote.  it was only callas.  Luckily, all the other bouquets, etc. were much more reasonable, so our grand total was right where I wanted it, but still, I was expecting half that for my bouquet.

In the beginning I had no idea (apparently) what anything cost for a wedding (i thought i did... lol).  Big mistake was going to visit the athletic club first for venues... it scared the crap out of me because just their costs was our whole budget!! =X

But, after the initial sticker shock, we redirected and found some great vendors... right now we're booking our florist... that was a bit of a hard one to swallow.  I had NO idea that flowers were so damn expensive!  However, they will be beautiful.

Now... to book a DJ! ...and figure out decor... and find my dress... and water the money tree.

Alcohol shocked me the most.  We're only serving beer and wine, no liqueur.

The thing that shocked me the most is how much our budget keeps going up and up...  it is ridiculous!  The biggest costs are the food and drinks for sure.  It kind of makes me sick at how much money we are spending but I have to remind myself that we are doing it so we have the perfect day we've always wanted!

Alcohol!  It is criminal how much markup there is on booze at these venues. I think I've found very good deals with most vendors but this one was non-negotiable :(
