Shipping Your Dress to Maui? Here's a Tip!!!

Hi Girls,

Just thought I'd share some knowledge I know have about shipping your dress to Maui. If you decide to ship your dress so that you dont have to carry it on the plane with you, make sure you go to the UPS store (or FedEX) weeks before you want to ship your dress to figure out when you need to ship it by and how much it will be. I used the online calculater and it appeared that I could do 3 day air for 70.00. Well, when I got to the store, my only options were 2 day air or ground (which I dont know how it can be ground since it's an island) and the price options were 150.00 or 70.00. Unfortunelty, I couldnt choose the ground shipping becasue it wasnt going to get their on time.... so I had to do 2 day..... so, 150.00 later, I'm trying to forget about it. Blah!!! Thats a big chunk of money. I decided to ship becasue we are flying from Massachusetts to Disneyland in California first for 3 days to break up the flights, I didnt want to carry my dress everywhere and thought it would be easier to ship. Lesson learned, do not trust online shipping calculators. I thought I timed it perfectly to ship yesterday.... I was wrong. Oh well, live and learn :)

I shipped mine USPS, I had no other option since it was going to a P.O. Box and from NC to Maui, next day air with $1,000 insurance it was around $80.  I'm sorry you had to spend the extra money =(

  • Mine was going direct to Dry cleaners, and they said to use UPS, I guess theyve had problems with usps, so thats what I did. I try to just keep reminding myself it wasnt my money, it's my parents! lol :)
  • Yup! We have ground shipping to Hawaii... which I dont understand how other big retailers refuse to send things ground to us! Ground usually takes 5-7 days. Sorry, just my rant on getting things shipped to Hawaii. It sucks when I try to buy some things online and shipping is only available to the 48 Continental US. We ship things out of my work ground to the mainland all the time - no problems!!!

  • Oh my gosh!! That stinks... but at least it will get here in time! I agree with the above poster... shipping anything to Hawaii is a PAIN and so expensive. I carried mine on the plane through multiple connections and it all worked out well- except my arms were so tired! But the good thing about flying with a wedding dress is that everyone is super nice to you

Glad everything worked out even though expensive... It's sneaking up on you! Are you getting excited?

Lol...I made sure I made some "bride" shirts so people would be nice...seeing I won't be carrying my dress...hahaha. I'm sooo excited, I've been packed since Sunday!
  • Awesome! People were so nice to me-- everyone saying congratulations and moving out of my way. Even letting me on and off the plane first. I'm sure you will get VIP treatment! Maybe some free drinks for the long flight.

The weather here has been PERFECT this past week! You are coming at the right time.

Awesome! 2 weeks away will be so nice!
  • I'm trying to decide if I should carry mine on or ship it. If you carry it on, does that count as your carry on item? Did you have to pay for it? When you shipped it, did you vacuum pack it?

I liked the idea of shipping it because then I wont have to carry it everywhere and worry about it. You should check with your individual airline about what it counts as, they are all different. I did not vaccum pack the dress, I just put it in a good size box so it wasnt squished. It should arrive today, fingers crossed... waititng on call from dry cleaner.
  • I didn't trust anyone to ship my dress and I didn't want to let it out of my sight so I carried it on. (I know I'm ridiculous)

It did count as a carry on. I did not have to pay, I brought that and a large tote bag that I just put my purse inside to board. I flew Delta. I did have to put it through the conveyor belt for security. They were nice enough to hang my dress in a closet on all of my flights, which made me feel so much better!

You could maybe fold it a few times and then put it in a small roller suitcase and carry that on. Then just get it steamed when you arrive it should be fine!

I did this. It was in a vacuum seal bag so we could fit the other wedding stuff into the roller bag too. It looked better once it was steamed than it did before I did the vacuum seal bag.
  • Allison---Did you get confirmation of arrival????
