Problem with the Ring

My FI bought me a sapphire engagement ring that is sterling silver. It has been 3 months and it's already looking really worn and ther is even a dent on the side now. Is there anything I can do to fix it without having to replace the metal entirely?

All (or most) metals scratch & dent. Talk to your jeweler as to bluffing it.

  • I would take it to the jeweler to have them fix it.  You should take your ring in every 6 months for inspection anyway but if there is a dent than I'd take it in sooner.

  • Silver is more maleable than gold (or white gold) so this may continue to be a problem.  It also tarnishes until there is a patina to protect it.  Everyday wear will continue to remove the patina (and make it shiny) but it will also continue to wear away the setting itself.  If it is at all possible for y'all financially, you may want to consider switching to a white gold setting.  The aesthetic will be nearly the same but you will gain strength with lessens your chances of loosing your stone.

But, as PPs said, ALL of your traditional options are going to scratch.  Please have your prongs inspected regularly.  Most stores require 6 month inspections to keep warranties.
