October 2012 Weddings

budget issues!

I'm stressed...FI is stressed. We are fussing...the wedding is ALMOST paid for we owe a little for our Photography.. and other odd and end things like centerpieces and we're just struggling to get this last stuff done with having to buy our house. First payment will be in October. We were pushed into buying the house we live in or move. It was too good a deal to pass up but its major stress! I'm so not prepared for this stress. So I'm going to drink a whole bottle of wine and relax and go to sleep! I need to come up with ways to cut costs on my centerpieces my budget was 100 dollars for 24 tables..and he doesn't want me to spend that...but I have no clue what to do that is cheaper than that! Its only like 4 bucks a table!

Re: budget issues!

  • Wow.  That is really cheap for 24 tables.  If you clear your mind and don't stress about it, the answer will come to you.  My brilliant ideas always come to me when I'm in the shower.  lol.  I guess because I'm not focused on the problem at hand.

You'll figure something out.  What's the old saying?  "Where there's a will there's a way".

    Good luck!

  • What was your original idea? Maybe we can help you come up with something else... 4 is an awesome price for centerpieces in my opinion! Keep your head up and try not to stress too much. I know what it's like when your trying to purchase a home unexpectedly and working it into the budget can be difficult. You'll get through it though!

  • I think the best centerpiece at a wedding that I even noticed and still remember was a bowl of candy lol. No one will miss a centerpiece have the venue put the bread there or something.

That's actually a neat idea! You could do a bowl of candy, or are you having favors? If so, instead of putting them at each place setting, you could put them all in a display in the middle and guests could grab theirs at the end of the night.

We're doing everything ourselves as far as food. And were just doing a buffet with bbq and the trimmings. No favors..no extras. My Vision was square vases that I could not find...so I bought cylinder ones for a dollar a piece from Dollar Tree...25 bucks basically. I wanted to throw some fabric in the bottom with some pine cones and disco balls..I've not located the disco balls so I scrapped that idea and don't really know what I'd like to do in place of it. Oh and were using rectangular tables so one vase in the middle of a long table with nothing around it will probably look dumb.

  • Do you have a Michael's or Joanne's near you? What I would do is bring one of your cylinder vases into the custom floral counter and see if they can suggest a some filler ideas in the store that match your decor - even consider branches or something offbeat that might work for cheap. The advice is free :). And you don't have to buy anything there, but if you do, start saving coupons and get the fillers one at a time w/ coupons until you have all you need. Dollar Tree has floral and vase fillers too super cheap if you can't come up with anything else. And please don't stress - your guests will still be happy for you, and you'll still be married to your FI at the end of the day - even if you skip the centerpieces completely. It's not like it's the license or rings or something required to become a Mrs.! Good luck & best wishes, Jennifer

  • I love the candy idea too! If you're having long tables, how about a few dishes each with different candies or snacks in them? Put some placemats in the bottom of the bowls for color (mix up the colors too so they pop) and voila you're done. All of that you can get at dollar store :).

  • Another idea for fillers--FI and I bought bags of sea glass at Christmas Tree Shoppe for $1 each. They come in different colors and sizes.

Or have you thought about candles/votives?

  • Do you, or anyone you know, have a lot of hard-covered books? In groups of similar spine tones of about 5 or 6, and tied together with twine (super cheap), it could make a very nice and simple centerpiece. That's how we're saving money on our centerpieces- half are books and the other half are tall vases filled with sparkly burnt orange christmas bulbs and topped with my hand-decorated lampshades. Books are simple, cheap, and very easy, but still give a fair amount of impact. Especially if you have candles or other lighting around them.

I hope that helps. I know how it feels to have a budget crisis!

  • If you already have the bowls from the dollar tree, could you maybe fill them with rocks that also come from the dollar tree?

I like the idea of candy too! If you already have the bowl you could easily fill it with candy.

  • You already bought the vases, so utilize them!!  You could do a submerged silk flower...you can get them half off most of the time at the craft stores.  I got mine at HobbyLobby (half off, of course).  You can do floating candles, glass rocks, anything really with a pop of color.

You mentioned your original idea with the disco ball.  Just see what it looks like without that one piece.  The pinecones sound interesting.  Let us know what you come up with :)
