Tipping?

Hi Ladies,
I've been lurking here for almost 8 months...my entire engagement! I never felt comfortable posting, but have always respected your input. I LOVE this board...always polite and FUN!
Anyway, I'm getting married in Jamaica in 30 days. I saw a post on another board about getting a gift for their photographer. That got me thinking about the appropriate amount to tip at a destination wedding. We are flying in our photag and dj (husband/wife team). We are paying for their services as well as their entire trip. What is an appropriate amount to tip? Also, what do we tip the officiant? My apologies if this has already been mentioned.
Thanks! :)

Re: Tipping?

  • I am sorry, maybe I am just cheap but I think if you are paying all their travel costs and paying for the service as well that they should not expect a tip.

  • Yeah we are bringing our Photographer paying for photos, travel and stay. We are also paying for the officiant travel and stay. Thats it. No tip

  • Welcome! Glad you finally decided to post. :) Thit topic actually just came up on the Hawaii board, too. You might want to see that thread, too. I've gone back and forth on the tipping. This is what I've decided: Photograph- a gift from Maui. We are also flying out our photographer and paying her way. But, she's a close friend, did our engagement pictures for free and is doing our AHR pictures for free, too. Officiant- Nothing. It's rude to tip them. If you want to do something, you make a donation to their church. Venue/reception food/cake- 18% per our contract. Hair- Nothing. It's really expensive. Plus, he's his own business and you don't tip business owners. Make-up- Not sure. She is also her own business owner, but her prices are fair. It'll be passed on how she does.
  • I personally have to agree with the above comments! I think if you are paying their way plus there regualar fees, I wouldnt be tipping. Really they are only needed for one day and your giving them an entire vacation. Therefore I wouldnt be tipping anymore then I have already put out.

  • Kimmy is dead on.  We too are having ours in Maui, and several of our vendors (rentals and caterers) automatically add tips on.
Our photographer is family...would of came anyways.  We are paying her ALOT (more then the local ones we've seen), but not paying for her flight as shes traveling with her family regardless.  This will be her first beach theme wedding as well, so it will be huge for her portfolio.
