Married!!! Can anyone help me with all this name change stuff??

Hi Ladies!

Yaaaay - I'm married!!  As of April 10th, 2011 I am officially a Mrs.

Any married gals out there that can give me some direction as to where to start with the name change items??  How long does it take to get your certified copy of your marriage license?  What do I do with it then ... forms needed, etc...  any help is greatly appreciated!

xoxo

Congrats!! Not married yet..but I can tell you I've asked around and the average seems to be about 2 weeks until you get your marriage certificate. Once you get that, you can either get your social security card or driver's license changed. (you don't need the social security changed before you do your license).

You will need to ask in the town where you get married how long it takes to get the certificate.  We went on our HM right after the wedding and our certificate was ready and waiting to be picked up when we returned a week later, I think it depends on how quickly your officiant files it in the town.   So, you should call and ask.

After you have that, it is just a matter of getting to the SS office and doing that and getting to DMV.  Personally, I put it off because I had no time, but when I finallyl went it was really rather easy.   The hard part IMO was notifying all your other bill companies of the change and getting all your paperwork there changed...the SS card and DL were easy!

I still haven't changed my credit card yet because I have to go to a Bank of America in person and fill out paperwork. I had to go to my personal bank (not BOA) to change the name on my debit card and my checking account.

I was able to change my name for my Target credit card on their website, and I got a new card in the mail within a week or two.

I've still got to change my passport, but that can be done through the mail. I think that there is no charge if you change your name within a year of getting the passport. Mine will be a charge since I got it years ago, but it's up for renewal anyway. Just remember to book any flights in your maiden name if use it before it's changed! (We took a road trip to Canada, and since my driver's license had my married name and my passport had my maiden, I brought our marriage certficiate just in case, but they never questioned me.)

I was married on April 10 last year :)

    Thank you! :)

No, because the hall dropped it after our reception was over! :P They said we could get a free small cake for our anniversary but we didn't feel like driving up to North Haledon to get it.

We actually froze one of the cupcakes from our rehearsal dinner to use as a first anniversary cake, but MH was cleaning out the freezer a while back and accidentally threw it away.

    Oh well!

Yes, you will receive a new passport. If your passport is less than 1 year old, you don't have to pay for the change, otherwise, you have to pay the renewal fee of $110.
a passport is good for 5 to 10 yrs.. depending how old you were when it was issued..so it could be expiring soon anyway, depending when you first got it.

Also, as long as you make travel arrangments using the name on your passport (and haven't had it changed yet), you are fine.  It doesn't need to match your license - you don't have to show both when traveling. So you can wait to change it if you want.. I just wouldn't wait TOO long, just in case.
