San Diego or Not?!

We really want to go to San Diego. Does anyone have any recommendations on hotels and/ or places we could visit?..We would really appreciate your help...Thanks

Re: San Diego or Not?!

  • Love love love San Diego!

I have reco's in mind but they 100% depend on your budget.
For example, Hotel del Coronado is AMAZING and beautiful....but expensive.  If you can afford it, that's my #1 recommendation.

The places to go also depends on your interests.
    Some suggestions:
    1) Sea World
    2) the beaches, especially Mission Beach
    3) the Coronado boardwalk at night - you see the SD skyline on the water
    4) EAT at El Agave (link) in Old Town (it's my 100% FAVORITE restaurant EVER and very romantic and small in vibe)
    5) Best sushi in SD (IMO): Harney Sushi (link), also in Old Town
    6) the San Diego Mission

There are also lots of great activities like kayaking, boating, horseback riding, and tours.

One thing I definitely recommend is renting a car.  SD is not supergreat with tranpo, unless you stay downtown and only go to things downtown.

    Enjoy!
  • I'd recommend posting this on the southern CA board to get local's input

I LOVE Coronado Bay area, very tropical and lovely. We stayed at the Loew's hotel there, the prettiest hotel I've ever seen. I peeked at your bio and see your wedding is in March 2012, so that would probably be "off season".

The San Diego zoo is amazing, I recall a large park in the center of town, but the name escapes me now.

We are doing a 2 week trip of the Pacific Coast Hwy this September after our wedding..........really looking forward to it. We'll end in San Diego/Coronado Bay before coming home

    Good luck.
  • I've been to San Diego several times and love it. The best hotel I stayed at was Tower 23. It's right on Pacific beach and there is a ton of stuff around there. Good luck.

  • We just got back from a wedding there. We stayed at the Bahia on Mission Bay. I would not recommend it, but their sister property the Catamaran Resort was amazing. We had a spa day there and I never wanted to leave.
We also had a couple nice meals down in the Gaslamp Quarter. We also saw a Padres game which was cheap fun.
The Mission Bay area was beautiful, and we went to the zoo for the day which I highly recommend if you like that kind of thing.

This is what I wanted to do but FI doesn't agree.

I stayed at the Bahia in Mission Bay.  I absolutely loved it there but it was about  7 years ago.  I have family there so I usually have a cheap room to stay in.
  • Thanks everyone for your help! After reading the positive responses we definitely will consider going to SD first.
