First wedding ever!!

When I say first wedding ever I don't only mean being married but also attending. I have already gotten our budget down, guest list almost done, bridal party picked,dj booked (bestfriend) venue booked ( due to its popularity ) but I'm stuck on the little things, theme, decor, colors, and all the little odds & ends that goes with a wedding. The hardest part is the wedding is in the state our family & friends are in and my husband to be works offshore, so I am basically planning this alone and have no family or friends where we live!! I need help please!!

Re: First wedding ever!!

  • Well first of all you don't really need a "theme."  Picking a color scheme will help your wedding look cohesive without there being an actual theme.  To pick your colors, think of ones you and your fiance both like or that have some meaning (favorite team, colors that make you think of a special time or fit with the time of year of the wedding, etc.) and use that as a starting point.  As far as the decor and little odds and ends go, I'd suggest scouring wedding blogs, Pinterest and different pages here on TK to just get you thinking of a direction you want to go in.  Also, look for pictures of past weddings held at your venue.  Seeing my venue set up has really helped me envision the decor and the set up of the room.  And even if your family and friends aren't by your side, they can still give opinions if you set up a group pinboard on Pinterest or email them pictures of things you like.

    Hope that helps!  Good luck!
  • You have plenty of time.  Enjoy your engagement.  You can browse the web and bridal magazines for ideas of color schemes/decor to give you a few ideas.  BUT those ideas might change once you're closer to the wedding so just have an idea book or site where you put all your ideas/prices/color schemes, etc.  That way, when you are ready to get underway with the planning closer to the wedding, you'll have your thoughts in one place to go over and pick and choose which you love and which you can do without.

  • Definitely take time to enjoy your engagement.  Make sure you check out the June 2014 boards.  I have been gathering ideas and information but don't plan on making any decisions until next summer.  Your tastes will change between now and June 2014.  Mine certainly have since I got engaged in October.  I would wait awhile longer to start making decisions.  You don't want to have something booked and then a year from now decide you don't want it.  You could end up losing money or worse sticking with something you don't like.

  • Thank you everone for your help, booking everything in advance is due to the fact of having the money now, as well I only make it back to my hometown twice before the wedding. I booked the venue early due to the fact of they already have the 2014 summer practically booked so I had to jump on it. I've already enjoyed my engagement, it's been 2yrs already. I'm trying to figure out the little things like what do I have to put others in charge of, what are the steps to a wedding as per seating, do I need programs, if my ceremony and reception are in the same place do I need things for guests to toss as we leave? like I know nothing of weddings.
  • Your wedding is 2 YEARS away- why in the world are you freaking out about it??

  •  It's helpful (but obvioulsy not required) to choose colors that you will like to have in your home and will match with your decor, because wedding photos are often used in the house as decoration and some of your wedding decor might find its way in there as well. But I do agree that you have plenty of time to figure it all out! It's fine to start thinking about it now, but that's why TK is so great....there are a million articles about literally everything. If you don't have anything picked out as a starting point, I'd start looking at the "real weddings" area and see waht you like. You'll probably be drawn to the same few colors and/or styles repeatedly when you look through them. Hope that helps! Don't stress yet---trust me, it gets bad later on. :)
  • I'm def not worried about getting in done all now, my main thing is I know nothing about weddings. I dont have any married friends or family and I don't have time to always be on here to look at things I was mainly asking for key things I need to know about wedding planning. I'm one person planning a wedding for 150 people. My fiancee is an offshore diver that I see every 6 months and talk to once a week as for family/friends they live 14hrs away. I need to start getting things in order now due to the fact I have a 20mo old and im 4mo pregnant so doing it all ALONE is hard at times. I figure start now and it will never be stressful!!!!! So please anyone that can give me a run down, a check list an anything it will be helpful, everyone please stop telling me to wait and enjoy it your wrong I need to start now 1 while we have the money and two while I have the time.
