Budget: Photography & Videography

This is sort of a run-on from my first post.

I still need to reach out to the photographers. I'm not sure if it makes more sense to put more $$ into the video or into the photography? My fiance and I are trying to decide how to proceed.

We're splurging on the venue and I'm told that the photographers I've mentioned are pricey, so I may need to look at other options. If it's OK to ask, is there a baseline for photography and videography pricing that I should be aware of? I'm trying to avoid "sticker shock". Hahaha.

Thank you for any help!

I would put your money into Photo over Video. Photographers run anywhere from $1000 and up and it all depends on their package. Try to get someone that offers you digital rights to your images and all your images on a disc, you will save tons going this way.
A good videographer around here will start at maybe $1500 but it all depends on the type of video you want. There are some that go up to $5000!

I highly rec my photographer, Kara Schultz and have heard nothing but amazing things about  I Do Films

Well, my fiance and I had a conversation last night and we both really want a really great photographer and a really great videographer. We originally budgeted $4,000 on both, but the guys we like are close to $3k for video. Does anyone know of a good photographer (not a studio) that is close to the $1,000-mark (is this even a possibility??? I really don't know to be honest)...

I have emails to Danielle and Heather in draft, so I'll see where they come in at.

Thank you for the rec Mrs.Paps but I'm not interested in Kara for our wedding. My friend used her a couple of years ago and had a bad experience,..

The price for your videography sounds a bit high. We scrapped video all together and splurged on photography. Different things are important to different people so go with your heart if you have it set on video. We knew if we got a videographer we would only watch the video a few times since they are pretty long. With pictures we have them up on Facebook, got a book, and also have some artsy pictures in frames on our wall and at our parents. We ended up paying $4000 for our photographer and it was worth every penny.

We ended up paying 2600 for photo and it was tough to pay that much. But we went with Timothy Whaley and I was just blown away by our first meeting with them. They were incredible. We looked at photographers starting at 800 and this was in our opinion the only way to go and definitely worth the money. That 2600 included one of the premium albums, 12 hours of shooting, an engagement shoot, all of our digital negatives.

** make sure when you ask about your digital negatives, you ask what the timeline is. A lot of the photographers will promise you your digitals, but the fine print stating that you have to wait 6 months or something like that. Make sure they are upfront about the timeline for your pictures. Who wants to wait 6 months for their pictures!!!

We used Heather parker and got our digital photos in either six or eight weeks I can't remember it was a while back now.

Have you been given any idea as to how long it takes to get albums made, if your album came with your packge?

I'm sorry your friend had a bad experience but both Heather and Danielle do amazing work!

We loved working with Heather! While we were on our honeymoon in Maui, we got some of our wedding photos emailed to us and it was such a cool surprise. The rest of the photos came in about 6 weeks. We still haven't decided if we are going to order an album but I liked the flexbility of not having to commit to one with a package up front. I wish I had given her more time to photograph me getting ready but I think we set it so she only had 20 minutes and I see photos of other brides with so many cool shots of that stuff. That's my own fault though. If you are looking for real candid type of pictures she is that kind of photographer rather than the kinds that pose you. We didn't want any of that. Overall we are very pleased with everything!

Try looking at Mike Hendzel for videography.  He's new, but so far pretty decent.  (found him through his fiance, Victoria Sprung - and amazing photographer).  I think together w them you'd come under budget.  I also like Theresa Scarbrough .  Plus, even if you find someone you like but they're not available, or over budget, ask for recommendations (who else knows the industry better?).  :)

i'm watching the photography threads for recommendations as well so thanks for posting everyone!

our caterer recommended eric zeffery.  www.ericzeffery.com.  $1700 for 12 hours, a printed book and all photos on a dvd.  i'm not sure about digital negatives - we have a phone conference scheduled friday so i'll find out.  i'm more impressed with his editorial shots than his bridal work though so i don't know.

michael roberts works out of prairie productions, which is a venue we looked at.  his package is $1500 which includes all the digital negatives and an hour's photo booth. we didn't click with him but some of his photos were amazing.
