In Maui...

Hey to all you past Maui HMers...we are here in Paradise and loving it! We have a big adventure planned each day, but two days are light with only evening events planned (Luau and sunset cruise). Wondering for any last minute suggestions of where to go. Mostly curious if there are any beaches worth finding. We are staying at the Hyatt and there is a strip we've been walking and hanging out on, beautiiful! Just wondering if anyone can suggest other places as a must-visit, perferably on the inexpensive side! Away from crowds would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Re: In Maui...

  • There's some really neat hikes in West Maui  up past Kapalua.  The Tiered Pools, the Olivine Pools and the Nakalele Blowhole was really cool.  We went early in the morning and were virtually the only people doing any of those hikes.

If you hike all the way down to the blowhole, just don't try to look inside it - apparently somebody tried to stand over the actual blowhole when the ocean came in to spout and he got sucked in and was never seen again.

If you guys are good at driving together, continue down Hwy 30 into Kahakuloa to get Julia's Banana Bread.  It's really good, but you'll drive down a one lane (but two-way) road along the side of a cliff, where the car coming downhill has to back up for the car going uphill.  You'll have to turn around and go back the way you came, and it was one of the scarier experiences we've had, but it was pretty neat.

We did all of these things one morning in about 3-4 hours, including all travel time, although we could have stayed to swim longer in the different pools or stopped at one of the beaches on the way back to our hotel.

  • Hey not sure if anyone is still monitoring this string, but we are planning a trip to Maui for our honeymoon next May. My question is about airfare. Currently round trip flight from Chicago is going for $793. Does this sound like a good deal, and should I scoop it up now? Or wait it out to see if the price falls anytime in the next few months. I have a feeling it'll go up before it ever drops again. Do you guys have a sense of whether this is a good deal or not??

    Thank you!
