Getting in Shape

embarrassing question :/

I am wondering if any of you have experienced anything like what I'm feeling.  I'm trying to eat clean and even more recently, making an attempt to stick to foods that don't make my  blood sugar spike, just to be healthier.  But OMG, my lower tummy, my bowls!!! I haven't been this bloated and gassy and in such discomfort in a while and I can't place what's doing it!  I've been having issues for a while with excessive ... *blush* gas, and bloating but it seems to have peaked now.  I don't know what to do because I don't know how much healthier I can make my food.  I'm about ready to give up on all this and go back to my semi-healthy foods that I enjoy *sigh*  I really hurt right now so I'm getting discouraged  :(
*Note: I've increased my shrubbery intake so maybe the extra carbohydrates/fiber is causing it??

Re: embarrassing question :/

  • Have you noticed a trend at all? Like, it happens every time after you eat a certain type of food like broccoli?

It's possible you've increased your fiber intake and your body is just adjusting. If it's causing you pain, definitely see a doctor. If it's only mildly uncomfortable (don't worry about embarrassing, everyone has gas on occasion, it's a normal human bodily function), then maybe try taking a Gas-x or something to relieve the bloating.

I've noticed when I eat more fiber than usual I do tend to see bloating/gas issues, but when my fiber normalizes it dissipates on it's own.

  • I just took some Gas-X and the pain is subsiding.  I am starting to think it might be the increased vegetable matter which I haven't really eaten a whole lot of before.  I guess I'll try not to give up too quickly and hope that my body adjusts.  Thanks for the advice ladies :/

  • Make sure you're drinking plenty of water. That will help the fiber, um, get moving faster.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • I had this same problem a few years ago with a certain type of Kashi cereal! I absolutely loved it, but it made me so uncomfortable I had to give it up! I'm sure its just something you're eating that's bothering you!! Good luck figuring it out and hopefully you feel better soon!

  • raw brocolli makes me bump every like 2 seconds LOL it happens!
  • Gassy foods are anything GREEN and NUTS.
To avoide the gas with nuts, soak them in water for a few hours first. This also actually makes them MORE nutritious for you (yup. true story.)
But ultimately, you're eating better and your body is telling you so. It'll calm down after a few months, but in the mean time it's just going to be something you have to put up with from allt he fruits/veggies/nuts.
Believe me... My change to veganism was a BIG SHOCK !! haha :) But now all is well!
  • You're probably having an adverse reaction to brassicas, gluten or dairy. Brassicas are the cabbage family of vegetables and include things like cauliflower, broccoli, kale, chard and, obviously, cabbage. They have a high amount of sulfur in them, and the amount of celluose (read: crunchy plant matter) they contain can be hard for some people to digest. Likewise, if you swithced to high-fiber, whole grains from enriched white flour products, your GI system may be having a hard time dealing with the transition. I think dairy is the most obvious, since on people decended from Scandanavian bloodlines actually have the ability to fully digest lactose, the sugar in milk products. This means that the vast majority of people are at least mildly lactose-intolerant. Anyway, you should definitely go see your doc. Any time you have a change in lifestyle, whether it be eating healthier or exercising, you should consult a physician. And GI problems are no joke. Worst cause scenario, you may have a GI disorder that requires medical attention.

  • i am with u 100%.  I started eating much much better about 9 days ago.  Have i lost weight?  of course not... yet.. :)  but my abdomen is totally distended, I have gas in the right lower quantrant that doesn't want to budge.  I am still going to the bathroom...but YEAH not cool.  I am drinking 1 gallon of water daily tho (I work out too) so it has to end at some point.  It's not like i was eating entire pizzas and cakes at a time before.  Goodness.

  • I've had trouble with gas with Fiber One bars but not with Atkins or Special K bars with similar amounts of fiber. Maybe try substituting different types of healthy food to find what works for you

<div>I would not call fiber one bars or special k bars healthful.. </div><div>Gas that comes with fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, etc are very normal.  </div><div>Gas that comes from highly processed sugar and grains is not normal.. </div>
