Sample Size Squeeze?

Hey everyone!  I  am ready to begin my quest for the perfect dress, but I am having major anxiety over not being able to try on a dress that fits.  I am a street size 12 and from what I understand, the samples at most places are aEuropean size 10 or 12. Will I not be able to try anything on? Am I plus sized? Anyone else experience this? Thanks Embarassed

Re: Sample Size Squeeze?

  • You are not plus sized, but places have sizes 8,10, and 12... you should be fine! :-)
  • I'm a street size 6, but when I try on wedding dresses I wear more of an 8 (or even a 10).  So you may have to go up a size or two.

  • I am a 12 also and I was able to try on most of the sample sizes.  There was only one that I couldn't try on because it was a mermaid (my mom insisted I try it on) and it was a size 6.  I couldn't get it past my thighs so it was a no go.  Unless it's a style like that you should be able to get it on.  It may not zip all the way but they can clip it so you can see what it should look like zipped up.

  • I'm bigger than a 12, and was also stressed about being able to fit into the samples.  I carry most of my weight from the hips down (lucky me), so I could fit into the dresses that were not drop waist/trumpet/mermaid.  They did have to clamp the dresses in the back because they wouldn't close, which isn't super flattering, but at least you can get an idea of what they look like.

What helped for me was to go to David's Bridal afterwards, where they had dresses actually in sizes that fit me, and compare how the styles looked on me, not necessarily the dress details themselves.  Hope that helps!  Don't worry, you'll have fun shopping!

  • I had the same problem when I tried some on. I am a size 14 so I'm right over the line into the plus size. I was getting really frustrated because every sample dress they seemed to have was an 8.

They had some samples in my size, but they were all really poofy sleeve - 80s looking dresses.

I agree with the above poster. The bigger stores like David's Bridal will carry better sampling of sizes to try on.

  • All the places I went to had dress samples that fit/almost fit me.  I'm a 12 as well, and it wasn't a big deal.  I guess the only down side was that many of them did not zip in the back when I tried them on, but since wedding dress sizing is way off street size to begin with, I didn't worry about it.  Trying on samples with corset backs can also give you a better idea of fit, as well.
