Making phone calls in the carribean?

We are going to P*nta Cana for our HM in June and I need to know the best/cheapest way to either have my cell phone work (Iphone-ATT) or get a cellphone there that works.  Our daughter will be staying with my grandmother and Mom so I will be making at least 2 phone calls a day to them and need to be able to be reached at all times.
I have no idea what I have to do or what is the best option to have a working cell phone in the Domincan so if anyone has any suggestions that'd be great, thanks!

  • Does the hotel have wifi?  Do you have an Android/iphone?  If so, get the app Talkatone.  Free calls over wifi.  Works great.

We did a text/data plan in addition to that for our recent Europe trip.  Between Talkatone, text, and email, we were very reachable when necessary.  You can easily add international text, data, and calling (which is the priciest option) through the ATT website.

I have an iphone but I don't believe the hotel (majestic elegance) has wifi....I did some research online and found that you can buy a phone at the airport and a prepaid sim card which comes with an international phone number but I know nothing else about this!

  • Just call ATT and ask them to activate a temporary international plan for you. Your cellphone will work in P. Cana, but calls may be expensive. We stayed at Zoetry Agua and international calls were included, so perhaps its the same at Magestic Elegance.
  • contact the hotel and ask them if they have wifi or a computer that you can use. why do you have to CALL 2x a day? and 2x? why 2? notj ust one? if you're concerned you can also give her the toll free # to the hotel and tell her to call if there's an emergency

why are you questioning how many times someone wants to call their daughter?  i'm sure she's going to have a great time but miss her daugther also.

why are you asking me why? that's the great thing about public message boards isn't it? you can ask whatever you'd like of the original poster :)

i'm sure she'll miss her daughter too however if calling is expensive for her there are other options....hence the wifi and emergency #s to mom...email mom in teh am, call daughter in the pm. get it?

  • I considered taking our daughter with us, that's how much I am worried about being away from her, she's not even 2 yet, and we've never been away for more than one night.  I have a lot of anxiety about it, so I want to be able to call my daughter as many times a day as I need to...my mom just started working nights so my grandmother will be the main caretaker for the week and she does not have a computer or wifi.  I trust my grandma the most with my little one, but still, for my own peace of mind I want to check in frequently.  Worst comes to worse, I will pay the long distance (whatever it is) to call and talk for only a few minutes, but I just wanted to see if anyone had experience getting a cheapo phone and an international/local to the DR sim card.

  • I went to Turks and Caicos a few years ago and although I activated international capability, my cell phone did not work.  Look into the app that was mentioned above and have a back up plan just in case.  Activate international calling on your phone anyway.  It shouldn't cost you anything and worst case, it doesn't work and you use the back-up plan.
