NWR ~ Chicago Knottie, that's a soon to be San Diego Nestie!!

Hello!

So sorry to intrude your wedding boards.

Totally NOT wedding related, but I any advice/tips are greatly appreciated!! Just found out about 2 weeks ago, that we are being relocated from Chicago to San Diego in the next 6 months for my fiances job. We are super excited, but are basically walking blind into this situation. I (sadly) have never even BEEN to California, let alone San Diego. We are looking to rent for the first year or more, until we get to know the area better.

So, I guess my question is~ can anyone recommend places or areas to rent inor areas to stay away from??? We are searching day and night online for any information that we can find, but its always good to get REAL feedback from REAL people!! THANK YOU so much in advance for any help :)Cool

There are some really nice neighborhoods here -- just depends on what you're looking for in your new neighborhood.  Anything in particular you're looking for?  Also, what area (part of San Diego) will your husband be working?

I was going to ask the same thing - what part of the city will you be working in?  When I was a travel nurse, I lived in Mission Valley.  There are a lot of apartment complexes in the area, but it is very busy.  You are close to the freeways, great shopping, dining, the trolley.  I liked living there when I first moved to the city.  But as the pp said, there are many great areas to live in - depending on how close you want to be to work.

He will be working downtown SD. Are looking to rent the first year- hopefully somewhere closer to downtown so its close to all the fun.

Then wanting to buy- somewhere on the outskirts (no more then 30 min). Plan on starting a family in the next few years, so looking for a good family friendly neighborhood!

To rent, I'd check out Downtown San Diego (near the ballpark), Little Italy, Bankers Hill, Hillcrest.

To buy, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos Carmel Mountain Ranch and Rancho Bernardo are some areas worth checking out.

I couldn't have said it better than Mrs. Erin.  exactly what I would have said. Downtown will be convenient but slightly more expensive probably. Little Italy is just north of DT and is very cute and has a nice, trendy vibe, with kind of a "foodie" thing going on.  It's like a toned-down version of DT.  Hillcrest (slightly farther north and then East of little Italy)is very hip and trendy with lots of fun bars and restaurants.  It has a large and active LGBT community, and it's a mix of older buildings and new condominiums and apts--a gentrified community. It would be a fun place to live for sure.  Bankers Hill is an uptown area near Balboa Park, so called because of the general affluence of residents there.

Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, and Mission beach, are mainly college age and young singles areas.  These areas aren't off limits to you, but it might not be the vibe you're going for as a newly married, professional couple. Nearer to DT would prob be a better fit for you, esp because of your H's commute (the morning/ evening commute from the North sucks because of traffic!) Mission Valley might be more affordable, and is close to malls and convenience shopping, but again the commute :-/

Hope this helps!! Let me know if you have other questions!

Thank you SO much for your feedback!! Really helps a lot! Really gets me excited about the move.

Any feedback on the Chula Vista area?? We've been told that Eastlake/Otay part is exceptional.
