Coconut cake?

I would love to have a coconut cake for my wedding, but I know that there are people who don't like coconut....I was planning on having a decent size grooms cake, just white with strawberry filling, and those who don't like coconut can have that. What do you all think?

If it's what you and your FI love, then I say do it. No matter what cake flavour you choose, there are going to be people who won't like it, so don't worry about pleasing everyone!

How many guests are you having?  How many will the coconut cake feed?  How many will the grooms cake feed?

What is a coconut cake?  Is the whole entire thing covered in coconut, or is it just flavored like coconut?

You could do one layer coconut if you are worried. I really wanted an all red velvet cake, but we decided to do the bottom layer red velvet only.

It depends on how many people each cake will feed. As PP said, you can't please everybody.  That being said, my experience has been that coconut is a very polarizing flavor.  People love it or hate it--there is no in between.  (I love it.)

I want a coconut cake too, and I also thought the same thing as you.  Not everyone likes coconut.  I totally agree with your idea of the grooms cake being something more for the masses.  Instead of one big cake we are doing 3 or 4 smaller 25 person cakes.  They will all be decorated along the same lines, but I get coconut, he gets tiramisu, and then maybe a more traditional flavor for the third and possibly fourth ones.  If you go that route, I highly recommend visiting Ross or Marshals.  Look thorough their home sections for cake stands.  They are SUPER discounted there.

But why wouldn't you serve ice cream with the cake?

We're having a coconut cake with chocolate ganache and mousse as one of the bigger tiers of our 4-tier cake.  It's coconut flavored, but doesn't have shredded coconut on the outside.  FI's family all really love it, so we're thinking it should go over well, but we will have 3 other flavors available, so everyone should be able to find something they like.

We're doing a coconut filling in a chocolate cake as one of our tiers.

I love coconut so I'm pretty excited by it!

We did half coconut and half red velvet. The red velvet definitely went first but I think you are ok as long as you have another option.

I agree with many of the ladies on here; do one layer of coconut and have another option for your guests. That way everyone wins! I will most likely do the same! I love coconut!

I had coconut cake as one of the smaller layers (with lime filling, holy crap was it good) and it went so fast!  People were asking for it, but there was none left except what the servers had set aside for H and I.

I'm having coconut and chocolate ganache as alternate fillings for our 3-tier cake. If they don't like the coconut filling, they can take the part out where the coconut filling is. :-) I'm glad people love coconut. I was a little worried about it.

Yum!  That sounds so good!  A layer of our wedding cake will be coconut/pina colada flavored and I cant wait :)

I found a gluten-free bakery that makes an INCREDIBLE coconut cake.  She actually soaks the entire thing in coconut milk over night and covers it in coconut creme.  When I tried it I literally could not stop eating the thing.  I was also very worried about having a coconut wedding cake, but I just recently had to go dairy-free as well and my options are pretty darn limited.  Fortunately she also makes a chocolate cake that is absolutely killer and we intend to do that for a grooms cake.

Considering that I have numerous food allergies and sensitivities we decided that if someone doesn't like coconut, at least everyone seems to like chocolate.  I would do layers on mine but we don't have the option of a large, tiered, cake.  It will be two layers at most.  I'm just happy I found someone who could do a really good job with gluten-free!

Do cupcakes in different flavors. MUCH cheaper than a traditional wedding cat (whaaatt??? NO CUTTING FEES) Then EVERYONE is happy. That's what we are doing along with mini-tarts, mini-pastries and mini-cookies.  Not everyone likes cake!
AND it doubles for favors…..people are going to be BEYOND stuffed from all the food you are serving and the boozed (or not soda) they will be consuming.

    Good luck!
Go Coconut (I LOVE yellow cake w/ lemon filling with lemon icing with coconut flakes)!
