Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Can I Have a Minister?

Neither my fiance nor I have been to church in years. However, we both strongly believe in God and want to be married by a minister. Our ceremony is going to be outside. Will a minister marry a couple outside of a church? Also, my fiance and I both consider ourselves Methodists, but have never been baptised. We want to do that before the wedding. If we ask the minister that baptised us, will he/she be more likely to marry us? I don't anyone to get the idea that we would be getting baptised just to get a minister. It's an important decision for both of us. And I think it would be cool/special to have the same minister that baptised us marry us as well.

Re: Can I Have a Minister?

  • It shouldn't be a problem for most ministers. My church will baptize anyone who wants it and will marry just about anyone.
  • There is no catch all answer for this one.  Different churches, different faiths, even different ministers are going to have their own opinion on this.  If you want to be baptized, are you thinking of joining a church?
  • I think really the only way to find out the answers to your questions is to start asking ministers or at least approach churches you are interested in. Good luck.
  • I would strongly suggest finding a church you want to attend, even if only occasionally. I'm not sure about Methodists, but I know in my Baptist church, being baptized makes you a member of the individual church as well. I think it's a little odd that you claim to be religious but apparently have no desire to worship with others. Church is a great way to be involved with the community as well.

I got baptized in a church I wasn't a member of and I'm still not a member there. Different churches have different requirements. Find one you're comfortable with and ask.

PS If every Christian worshipped in a church every Sunday, or even every other Sunday, there wouldn't be enough churches to hold them. You and your fiance can constitute a church.
