Ladies, please help dress me :) PIP heavy

H has a work Christmas party this Saturday, which he told me about yesterday. This sparked a fashion crisis. I don't have any dressy tops to speak of, and I'd feel too dressed up in my dresses. I don't have a chance to shop before Saturday (and he's not going to want to drag around the mall with me anyway).

It's the first time I'm meeting work people (I've met a couple but only because he's friends with them outside work). I'll also be meeting his bosses. I want to make a good impression.

I've decided already on dark jeans and either black or brown heeled boots (inside the jeans). These are the options I have for tops (very sorry for the quality of the pics, they were taken on my phone). And please excuse the mess, its laundry day!

Thank you for your help :)

brown twist front long sleeve

blue scoop neck. Though it's probably too short on me now

Red ruched v-neck. Also have a light blue one like this

slight wrap front

Wrap front sweater. Also have this in dark grey

Re: Ladies, please help dress me :) PIP heavy

  • Aye, I hear you on the not dressy enough... these are my 'nice everyday wardrobe'.

I need a basics shopping trip lol... I thought I was fine, but I have nothing between 'nice everyday' and 'dressed to the nines'.

The slight wrap front is actually kinda a grey-blue. I haven't worn it much so may be time to dust it off.

    Thanks. :)
  • I like the gray? slight wrap front best, followed by the wrap front sweater, probably the dark grey color, though the maroonish might be more festive.  Third would be the brown twist front.  The blue one isn't too short, but I'm not feeling it.  I feel the red one isn't dressy enough, but I'm not sure why I think that.

  • I like the wrap front sweater, it looks festive. I would pair it with some sparkly jewelry!
  • How dressy are you supposed to be? At my old job, Christmas parties were semi-formal and people wore what they would wear to a nice wedding. That meant a dress or nice skirt/top combo for women. I would make sure you find out just in case jeans would be too casual.

I know the feeling, I have to decide what I'm going to wear to my own company  Christmas party next week. :)

I have no idea. I can't get in touch with the host directly and H doesn't think to ask such things (and if I asked him to ask, he'd tell me it didn't matter). So I figured smart-casual to err on the side of caution.
  • I either like the slight wrap front or the wrap front sweater.

  • I would definitely ask your love to ask tomorrow. I have never been to a non-semi formal Xmas party, so jeans seems WAY underdressed to me.

To me, erring on the side of caution would be wearing a skirt or nice pants. If it's dressy, your jeans, no matter how dark, will stick out like a sore thumb.

  • I'm always a fan of the upscale consignment shops, cheap enough for a dress you may not wear again but classy enough to make your husband look good good to the bosses. I personally believe a little overdressed is always better than under dressed.  Von Maur also always has awesome cheap clearance dresses

I completely agree but no one, including OP, is getting it. Wearing jeans to my old employer's Christmas party would have made you the talk of the party and definitely would not have impressed coworkers nor the boss.

I agree with this. I would prefer to be overdressed than underdressed. If I was going to someone's Christmas party, regardless of who it is, I would probably look nice in some black pants and a nice shirt. My mom hosts a Christmas Eve party every year, and whenever we have newcomers, they always look dressed up and nice. Granted we don't ever have a dress code, but it's always nice to look a little nicer for parties and holidays. :)<div>Yes, I realize how many times I said "nice" in that paragraph.</div>

  • I'll take the dress pants note on board and see if I have anything. Not sure I do though. :/
  • I found a single solitary pair of dark grey wide leg dress pants in the wardrobe. Black heeled boots, and the purple wrap sweater?

Thanks for all your help ladies, it's much appreciated. :)
  • Do you not own any kind of dress/skirt?  Even slacks is a bit inappropriate for a holiday party for ladies imho.  If you are stuck with pants, a sweater you normally wear with jeans probably is a bit on the casual side.  Do you have any cute jackets you could layer with to add some sense of "dressy"?  ie: a girly top (sparkles, ruffles, something interesting) with a black cropped blazer.

  • If you're asking for opinions of the wrap sweater with dark grey dress pants and black heeled boots, I think they would work much better at getting close to the unknown dress code than jeans.  Hope you have a good time, and find out who the organizer of said party is so that you can chat them up, and get better info for next year! Have fun!

This exactly. If it ends up that nice jeans are the norm there, you will stick out less than if you wear jeans and everyone wears nice pants/skirt/dress. Also, sticking out for being slightly overdressed is MUCH better than sticking out for being underdressed, IMO.

And I second Becka... can you ask his coworker friends who have been there for at least a year? I imagine the Christmas party is an annual thing so they should know what the dress code is. That would at least give you some peace of mind!
  • I'll see if I can get in touch with any of them, but I definitely feel better after talking to you all.

I'll try and upgrade my wardrobe a bit in the new year!

Sounds good!  You mentioned H has freinds he works with, could you ask them what the dress code might be?

  • You should dress up and have fun with it! Even for family gatherings I put on a nice skirt and sweater...even if some of my other familiy members are wearing jeans and flannel it doesn't matter. Holiday means you're allowed to get fancy!
