NWR: Vacation to New Orleans?

Not wedding related, but I am looking to travel to New Orleans around May 14 for family vacation.   Seven people, age 19,22,24,42,28,29 and 68.  Sone has been there for a mission trip.  Looking to either renting condo for five days then 2 days at Gulf Shores or vise/versa.  We are more of a exploring, touring type family and not into sports.  Any suggestions?

Thanks so much and good luck to all the brides!!

Some things to check out:  World War II Museum http://www.nationalww2museum.org/. The museum has a good restaurant, so I would plan to have lunch there if you go!  You can do a Mississippi River cruise - http://www.steamboatnatchez.com/. Pat O's is a must, but I'm not sure if your 19 year old can get in - http://www.patobriens.com. Gallier House is a beautiful and historic home to tour - http://www.hgghh.org/. For a good burger joint right outside of the french quarter, try Port of Call http://portofcallnola.com/. Hope you have a great trip to Nola!!

Oceana's is going to be on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.  So I would not recommend it.

Restaurants that I recommend are Cochon, Drago's (best charbroiled oysters and pasta!), The American Sector (WW2 Museum Restaurant that PP suggested) in the CBD.

In the Quarter I recommend Mona Lisa's for italian and pizza and Yo Mama's for burgers (way better than Port of Call and far less crowded) and Mr. B's for a nice meal.

For restaurants (can you tell yet that we like to eat down here?!), I LOVE Bayona for fine dining, Fiorella's for fried chicken, I 2nd Cochon, and also Jacques-imo's for Cajun and Creole food.  In fact, I almost always bring out of town guests to Jacques-imo's (make a reservation, or you'll wait forever) for dinner and then right next door to the Maple Leaf for local music...both places are off the beaten path for tourists, but worth the trip uptown!!

You can also do all sorts of French Quarter walking tours like ghost tours or culinary tours just to name a few, but there are ALL sorts of walking tours:

    http://www.noculinarytours.com/

Also, you can always do a swamp tour, a bus tour, Katrina tour, etc:

If you are at all into nightlife and/or music, I highly, highly recommend that you check out Frenchmen St. on one of your nights, which some people say is sort-of the "locals' Bourbon St."

I have to say that although Oceana's is going to be on Kitchen Nightmares, I have eaten there and their food is great! There have been many awesome reviews about them.  You have to go there and experience it yourself, but we have never had a problem with food or service at Oceana Grill!

There is also the Aquarium downtown, take a ride on the streetcars, visit City Park, swamp tours.  And you have to stop by Cafe Du Monde and get some beignets!
