Bold Red Lips?

Hi ladies!

I'm looking to do a vintage 40's/50's makeup look, and I love the bold red lips they usually have...but I'm not sure how to pull it off. I'm very pale with medium/dark brown hair and blue eyes. I have some lipstick colors I use for everyday, but they are a little more on the pink side and aren't as bold as what I'm looking for.

I've gone to Sephora, Ulta, etc. and asked for recommendations, but they all seem to end up telling me to just try the samples and see what works. Do any of you have any shades of red or brands that you swear by? Especially if you're fair-skinned? Thanks! Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Bold Red Lips?

  •  Here are some popular reds that that might work for you:

    - MAC Ruby Woo (I've tried this, and it can look like a very dark pink on some people, but it is very pretty)
    -MAC Russian Red
-Make Up For Ever Moulin Rouge
    -Maybelline Red Revival

For my wedding, I filled in my lips completely with MAC Cherry lipliner, then put Revlon Fire and Ice over it.  I really thought it turned out nice.  By itself, Fire and Ice looks crazy bright. Over the lipliner it looked just right.

Also, it might help if you know what kind of undertone you are looking for. Do you want one that it a blue red or more orange red (warm)?
  • I have fair skin and I have a red that I use often. Its a drugstore brand, NYC.  The color is Retro Red.  I usually wear it when I dress in pin up style, which is often, and it looks great no matter what.  Its a blue-red.  MAC Russian Red, as PP said, is great!  Fair skin is GREAT with red lips :)  Don't be afraid.

  • Thanks! I was thinking a blue-red, so I'll look into all those choices. I'm just glad to have some tried and true colors to start with! :)

I forgot to add British Red by L'oreal and Revlon Really Red
  • I have fair skin as well, and I like Sephora's lipstick in The Red. I get the lip stain, and when that dries I put a clear gloss over the top. Thel lip stain lasts forever, but it tends to dry out my lips a bit.
  • Sorry, the lipstick is The Red and the lip stain is Always Red.
  • I used MAC's Cherry liner with E.L.F.'s Lip stain in Red Carpet. You can see it in my siggy. (Obviously.)
