Marriage Lic-for those of you who...

got yours the same day you went in to apply for it, did they just print it out right away, and hand it to you?

We're getting ours the day before the wedding since its unlikely that we'll get to Maine before then.

The woman at the town hall told me that we could come in the day before and we'd be all set. But I'm just wondering, do they just type it all up, print it out, and hand it to you?

  • Though we got ours in Mass, it was typed up. I wasn't sure typewriters were even used anymore! Miss those days of pounding down the keyboard and having to use white-out to correct mistakes. Oh the good ole days. Anyway...

Here you leave the courthouse with it. Since we're in TX though, it's not good for 72 hours.

  • Well, in Mass it's a 3 day waiting period. I am willing to bet in Maine they'll type it up, too and hand it to you if there is no waiting period.

It looks like there is no waiting period. You just need your licence and go to the town clerk's.
  • No waiting period in Ohio and we walked into the office, chatted with a very lovely lady and less than 20 minutes later walked out with our marriage license in our hands. Ohio prints theirs out rather than typewriter but it really was that simple. We could have gotten married that afternoon if we'd wanted to. If there's no waiting period or conflicts (divorces not finalized, etc), then you should be good to go!

  • We got ours yesterday.  Very painless.  Filled out some paperwork, the Lady typed it up with a word processor, and we were done.  No waiting period.

  • I think states have different policies or whatever. But we got our right then and there. And then on the wedding day your officiant signs it and you send it off to the courthouse to be recorded. But thats here in Oklahoma.

  • As long as your state says you'll leave with it, then you'll leave with it.

Ours- we filled out paperwork, they verified everything, typed it up and then had us sign verifying it was correct to our knowledge. Then they printed what we take with us (here in VA, only your officiant signs to certify, since we already signed to obtain the license) along with a "certificate" that we get to keep as a momento.

It took about 30 minutes? Not long, and definitely not painful. Actually was the easiest WR thing we've done! lol

  • I'm from VA and had the same process as firemedicrr. Just went in with our driver's licenses as proof of our identity. We filled out some paper work. They typed it up and had us swear our info was the truth and then we walked out with the license and the momento certificate. I'm surprised how easy it was. I was concerned I'd need further documentation since this is my second marriage. But nope. Of course each state is different. Verify everything with the courthouse before you go in to do it. Some validations of the license vary, I believe our's is good up to 60 days. But, since we're getting married next week, not an issue.
  • We got everything that day but couldn't use for 48 hours. We left with a momento certificate and our paperwork which gets signed and our officiant sends it in to get our real certified license which will be mailed to us. La is so weird and difficult sometimes. I filled out the application online and took it with us so it took maybe 15 min total.
  • In WI they mail it to you within a few days.

  • We walked out with ours too, we just couldn't use it for a certain period of time (I think 24 hours). They printed it from a computer I think.
  • Yeah, every state is different.  You'll have to check with their Justice Court (I think that's it) and see what the state policy is.  Here in Ohio, I preregistered the night before (filled out all the info) and went in the next day and they printed it out on the spot, notorized it, and we had to do this cheezy "I solemnly swear that the information provided is correct..." nonsense, I almost laughed.  And ours is valid for 60 days, so if we had someone sign it right there, we'd be married! lol
