BM gift

I have ideas for my bridesmaids gifts but haven't done my shopping yet. I took the very good advice of the ladies here and I'm doing gifts tailored to each girl. For my cousin, I'd planned on some barware, a new drink recipe book, and some mini bottles. She just shared with me last week that she's going off BC and "whatever happens, happens". I couldn't be happier for her and her DH,  but now I'm not sure this gift is appropriate. I'm getting married in two months, and since they aren't technically "trying", they just aren't preventing, I'm not sure if I should go with it still or decide on something else. I read somewhere that it takes about three months once you stop BC to conceive, but I conceived while on BC, so who knows...

Re: BM gift

  • If that is something you think she would appreciate I don't see why you should change the gift. She won't be pregnant for the rest of her life so she will get use out of it eventually. You know her best though, so if you think she would be offended at receiving this kind of gift after telling you her news then yes, something different might be better.

  • I agree with Kris. I think it's a great gift!  One of my bridesmaids would have loved that, and even though she loved what I did give her, I kind of wish I had gone with your idea now!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

ditto PP.  Even if she's pregnant when you give it to her, eventually (9 months or 2 years down the road) she'll be able to drink again, and if it's something she'd enjoy I don't think that will change.  You can always let her know that you --bought it-- (thought of it?) before you knew she was TTC and you hope she'll still get use out of it someday!  You could also try to find a recipe book that includes a variety of virgin cocktails.

As for the 3 month thing: everything I've read says you can get pregnant pretty much immediately after stopping the pill.  Some doctors say you *shouldn't* (i.e. should use a back-up until your body is back in its own rhythm) but there's no data to suggest that a pregnancy immediately after stopping the pill is bad for mom or baby, so you never know!

ETA - didn't intend to tell you to lie to your friend! haha, re-reading I realize you haven't bought it yet.

<div>This is a great idea too! She can still use the barware to drink mocktails and adding another recipe book, or getting one with a virgin-cocktail section shouldn't be too hard.</div>

I'm pregnant.  Prior to knowing this, my sister bought me a cocktail shaker for Christmas and ILs bought me a bottle of wine.  As a housewarming gift, a friend bought us 2 cases of beer.  I can't use any of it right now and I wasn't upset or offended at all.  It was no big deal.

It does not take 3 months once you stop taking BC to conceive.  I promise that is a myth.

  • I think the only reason that you hear about the 3 months is because you're more likely to miscarry if you're recently off the pill.

<div>This is a myth also.  Before TTC, I had a discussion with my doctor.  I asked her when I should stop taking the pill.  She told me a month before TTC, but she advised that I could get pregnant as little as 3 days after stopping the pill.  She explained that she often prescribes BC to her patients who are having trouble TTC because women are most fertile immediately after stopping the pill.  I explained my concerns about having been on BC for so long and she said that it would not affect the baby.  Aside from my own personal experience, I also have several friends who got pregnant either while taking BC pills or immediately after stopping and they had healthy pregnancies.  Wow this thread went in a completely different direction...</div>

  • lol...I have proof in the form of my 18 month old daughter. She was a Nuva Ring baby. I had HG, but had an otherwise healthy pregnancy so who really knows. I'm just so excited for my cousin, and for another baby to buy things for :)

I think I will go with my original gift. I know she'll like it, and if she can't use it for awhile then it's just something to look forward to.
