  Yes, step away from the registry.  Slowly step away
  
  You will get the majority of your registry items at your shower and cash, checks, gift cards at the reception so you can use that to purchase whatever you didn't receive from your registry.....and any other fun things you find along the way...but not before the shower

  I think it's okay to add, but I wouldn't delete or lower quanitities.  I don't think people will stalk your registry like you do, but someone may notice that something they were considering buying for you has been deleted, and start to wonder...

  I think you should check every once in awhile, to make sure that certain items are not out of stock or discontinued. Definetely take off everything that is discontinued and replace them with in stock items. Nothing worst than being a guest at a shower printing out the registry at the store and finding that half the items are discontiniued or back ordered. I have to say I have the same problem.So I'm probably not the best person to be giving advice.
