  I have no clue what people see in Rob Pattinson. He's constantly dirty looking.

  Exactly!  Sparkling is about as lame as vampire traits could possibly get!  For me, it's got to fit into the Buffy universe or I can't take it seriously as a vampire (although the True Blood universe does a good job defining itself in an interesting and relevant way, too).
