FH and I aren't getting married until 9-15-12 so I'm only in the very early planning stages, more like "getting general ideas" stage. We know we are having the ceremony and reception at my parents farm and FH and my Dad are in the process of designing a "picinic shelter" type building for the reception (and other family events) because for what it would cost to rent a tent for two days we can build a permanent structure....
Anyway, we don't want anything fancy, I'm shooting for "rustic elegance" and I had an idea, which may suck. Instead of using your regular old glassware I was thinking of mason jars. FH and I use them as regular glasses all the time. So do my parents. Between us all we probably have two hundred of them!
So, dumb idea or cute?
No, that's not my real name. And FH's name isn't Nun (as in Nun ya bidness) either.

I like the idea of using them as candle holders or centerpieces. I think it will be fun to incorporate them in some way, but maybe drinking out of them isn't the best way to do that. Though FH and I will probably use them for our toasting glasses.

I'm going to have to start buying some different size jars. All I have are pints right now. Love the mixing and matching of sizes.
Hi!
My own wedding is not until late 2011 / early 2012, so just like you, I'm trying all different things out to decorate with and see how I can be creative and save some money in the process.
Good idea to decorate with the jars: great as candle holders, or to hold your table center-pieces in. You could also incorporate them as the favors (I have a friend that gave away small ones with candy in them, and made cute labels for them using their computer).
I wouldn't use them to drink out of at the wedding. IMy only reason is that with that type of cup lip, people are bound to dribble and there goes their outfits.
[QUOTE]I've seen some really cute centerpieces with mason jars and might look for some photos of those for inspiration. I would think twice about the mason jars for glassware though. Some people may think they are really cute, but others may kind of side eye you. More importantly, depending on how many people you have, will you even have enough? Keep in mind that many people will get several drinks throughout the night. Are you going to have someone doing dishes throughout your party? I would strongly consider plastic cups for drinks.

Plastic cups may be a good idea if you are okay with the look of them. If you are going for an informal wedding though, why can't you just have running tap on hand? Also, if you are weary that your guests are going to "side-eye" you then maybe they shouldn't be there b/c they may not know you enough to matter...
