St Lucia, P**** Cana or Jamaica(Negril)?

Help! We love the sound of all three. This is a once in a lifetime trip and we want to choose the right one. We are looking for romantic, relaxing with a little nightlife (bars are fine), lots of beach time, water activities and beautiful sites.

I've known two people to come back from St Lucia with food poisioning... anyone else hear this?

any tips, advice, experiences, etc would be awesome!

Re: St Lucia, P**** Cana or Jamaica(Negril)?

  • i know people who have come home with food poisoning from everywhere on the planet-and have gotten it at places at home too.

PC  has very little VERY little outside of the resorts as far as nightlife. it's pretty non-existant. st lucia has some in the towns. i've not been to jamaica so i cant say.
but as far as sites, stuff to do off of resort, beaches, water etc.. playa del carmen fits that perfectly, as does cancun. i'd check into that. so does barbados.

  • You can get food poisoning anywhere, so I'd leave that out of the equation.

Like Ali said, there is nothing to do outside of the resorts in Punnta Cana.  I think St. Lucia or Negril would be good options for you, as would Playa del Carmen.

I would also recommend checking out Playa del Carmen.  You can fly direct from Boston to Cancun.  It's not that far south of Cancun (there are tons of private shuttles taking people from the airport in Cancun down to Playa, so it is very easy).  Beautiful beach and cute little town with bars, restaurants, etc.

  • I vote St. Lucia!!  There isn't much night life at all--- but the island is so beautiful!  We stayed at Sandals La Toc and loved both the resort and the island.  We hiked the Pitons, snorkeled, visited the hot springs- there is so much to do on the island.
Like the other girls have said, there isn't much outside of the resorts in P Cana but there are some very nice resorts.  (We stayed at a Secrets there and really enjoyed it.  We also stayed at Dreams in La Romano with our family, which we really enjoyed as well.  We liked the water/beach better in La Ramano than P. Cana)  We snorkeled and did an atv tour, but it didn't compare to St. Lucia.
I went to Playa Del Carmen with my girlfriends for a long weekend.  It is really beautiful and there is definitely night life there (there is a cool bar with fire dances-- purple parrot?  blue parrot?  some color animal combo name!)  Unfortunately I can't speak to the romance aspect since I've only gone with friends.  Our travel agent has recommended the Secrets there, but we have chosen other options she has presented each time.
You should talk to a travel agent, they will be knowledgeable on each area and the top resorts for honeymooners at each respective place.  We really like ours if you need a recommendation, just PM me.

    Good luck!

OK we have been to all 3. And St. Lucia wins hands There is a ton of things to go on the island.
Negril has amazing beaches but nothing really else to do imo.
I am not a fan of Jamaica at all.
Playa del Carmen in mexico is also really really nice and we have been there about 10 times, but it doesnt compare to st. lucia!

  • I've heard - just heard now - that there are security guards with guns on the beaches in PC.  I've also heard that it's not very safe to leave the resort in Jamaica.  I've only heard good things about St. Lucia AND...I'm probably a little biased as that's where we are headed for our honeymoon.  Making the decision is so hard...try working with a travel agent.  Usually they don't charge any fees and they should be able to help you find what's best for you based on what you are looking for.  Good luck!!
