As some of you know, FI's gma recently passed. Living with her was her obese dog (who has been rehomed) and FI's disabled cousin (who has not).
FI are currently in discussion of we want to extend our old house (5 blocks from us) to the cousin. He's a bit of a recluse but can take basic care of himself. We would just need to check on him once or twice a day and drive him to go shopping once a week or so.
It would solve our problem of finding something to do with the house and he could pay for utilities and his own groceries with his SSI so we aren't stuck paying two sets anymore. It would also keep him away from a group home and family who would otherwise just take him in for his money, I bet if we could even save some of it up in case his circumstances ever were to change. His dad is out of the picture and his mom is dead. It would almost be like adopting someone my own age.
It's sort of crazy to think about but he is family and it wouldn't be too much responsibility and it feels like the right thing to do.
