Videography

What are you doing for videography, if anything? And what are you paying? (if you don't mind me asking)

I know this has been asked before but I never really payed attention because I wasn't to the point of thinking of it yet, haha. It's definitely not high on our priorities, ie. not much room in the budget for it, but I do want SOME kind of video. I was trolling craigslist last night looking for new people trying to break into the business but even they were charging ~ $1,000. Ugh, seriously?! I'm trying to brainstorm other ideas...

Re: Videography

  • We're having a videographer (actually there's going to be 2-3 guys doing it) they're fairly new but they're becoming really big really fast around here.  They are always posting new wedding videos and it makes me more and more excited that they will be at our wedding.

They charge around $1000 here as well.

  • We aren't having one. :( I really wanted one, but the one we liked was $3000 and I can't justify that for a movie I am only going to get enjoyment out of watching.

  • This is something that was important to me from the get-go, so I budgeted for it early.

The ones in my area start around $1000 and that's for very basic film packages. We're paying about $2500, but we're actually getting a fantastic deal because he's throwing in an extra hour and we're getting a longer edit film because he's friends with my wedding planner. His packages usually start at $3000.

And because I'm an AW, here's his website: www.tweedweddings.com

I could watch his films all day.

  • I'm paying 1050.00 because I added a few extras. His base price is 900.00.
  • I was uninterested in a videographer until I saw wedding videos.  I finally convinced FI, but I couldn't believe the prices. Someone I graduated high school wtih actually started his own videography business, and his basic package is $800.  We met with him and hired him. I thought his price was fair and included everything we wanted. We paid the first third as the deposit, owe the second third a few weeks before the wedding, then we send in the last third after we get the video, so it's very manageable.

  • We are having a friend do it for us. It will kinda be like a home video. We don't need any of the fancy effects nor sounds (we're deaf anyway).

We still haven't decided how we'll pay her. Maybe give her a gift or cash.

  • We hired a videographer and I'm glad noone will have to worry about it on the wedding day.  We are paying $1,500 for 8 hours of footage and 3 copies of the DVD, a bit more than I wanted to spend but he's worked with our photographer a lot and we got a discount on the photography.

    Anniversary
  • I really want one. FI isn't too interested but he hasn't discarded the idea yet. So far most videographers I've contacted cost the same (or even more than) as photographers. Which is ridiculous, we can't pay that much. And since I figure we're behind on hiring one and all the good ones are probably booked, I'm coming around to the idea of just a basic video. Not by a friend or family member, but just a basic video service. I'm even thinking about finding a college student. I think it's not the same as photos you know? Of course there's all sort of video techniques, but I think when you're talking about basic photos and basic video.. it's very different. Or at least that's the way I'm starting to see it. I just want something live to have afterwards, I don't really care about the extras anymore
  • I wish I could afford one. But they're expensive around here and I just don't have the money. We'll see though. I'm under budget on just about everything and may be able to scrape something together at the last minute. Or I may just have someone film the ceremony with FI's video camera. I definitly want that filmed. I tend to not remember what happens during big events (like the proposal) or when I'm onstage and I'd really like to have someway to remember what was said.

  • We are paying exactly what Michelle is paying.  $1500 but ours is for two cameras and the entire day of coverage (probably like 12ish hours).  we get 4 copies of the DVD and they are also doing a "love story" that will have all the highlights and can be condensed small enough that we can email it to our friends.

Our videographers are a smaller up and coming company that is based out of one of the suburbs, so is much, much cheaper than others.  we wanted a videographer but wanted it to be reasonable while still being high quality. Lots of the other videography packages by the big names around here are more like $8000++.

Just do your research, watch some samples, talk to people, and I am sure you can find someone that will work what what you want and is within your budget :)
  • We arent having one but we will be live streaming or skyping the wedding to my mom & possibly his dad bc they wont be able to travel bc of serious health issues :(.  So...we will at least have a video of the ceremony.  It wont be anything fancy but I am fine with it.

Have you figured out the logistics of this yet?? I have out of the country family members who are asking for the same thing and I'd loove to do it as well. I just haven't figured it out yet..
  • i found ours on craigslist for $650...its a guy that does it on the side and has A LOT of weddings he has done to show as examples on youtube.....and they are really pretty good! i was looking at an actual company that we almost went with and they charged $1200. i just couldnt justify spending a ton of money on it but i knew we definetly wanted one.

<div>Yeah that's much closer to what I'd like to pay. I think I'll just keep searching craigslist looking for something similar. </div>

  • I'm just going to have a couple different people running home video cameras, just to make sure we get everything. My grandpa volunteered which is great, but when he did my hs graduation, he barely got any of it. So I'm hiring my step-mom's nephew-in-law to run a camera, but he said he'd do it for free.

  • Meagan- If you go the Craigslist route, just make sure to see examples of his work and get a reference or two that you can actually contact (not just online reviews). When we started looking at videographers, we saw a LOT of really crappy ones.

The inexperienced ones tend to think they need to get every moment up close, and it ends up being really annoying for the guests b/c they push them out of the way and have a lot of lights and cables all over the place. This happened at my friend's wedding and it was extremely annoying as a guest.

We found one that we love and his style is what we're looking for (documentary, stays in the background, etc.), but he would be $3,600, so we haven't been able to find that money in the budget yet. So for now, we haven't booked anyone. I'd rather have no video than a crappy videographer that annoys the guests.

For the DIY route, my DJ recommended this: http://storymixmedia.com. I don't think we're going to do it, but it could be an option.

  • We weren't going to do one but then after I kept thinking about it I really wanted to have one.  My parents watch their wedding video every year on their anniversary and drink champagne.  Pictures can't capture hearing the best man speech or watching someone do something funny on the dance floor.  We just booked our videographer last month.  We went in there with a budget of $1500 max.  Well we ended up deciding to upgrade our DVD to HD (FI's choice) so we are paying $2,100.  They are going to film bridal prep starting at 3.  We are going to have them until the cake cutting then thats it.  So I think it is 8 hours of footage plus 3 dvd copies.  I do have to say that our videographer is amazing and the quality of his vidoes are awesome it's like watching a movie!

  • We're probably just going to have a video camera on a tri pod.  I am only concerned about filming the ceremony and it seems silly to spend a huge amount of money to have someone come for a 1/2 hour.

We're not hiring anyone, I can't justify spending the money on this. However, I might ask a friend to set up a tripod and tape the ceremony.
